Поскольку текст на оригинальном английском языке, то, скорей всего, имелось в виду то, что имелось в виду, без выкрутасов, сопутствующих переводным текстам. Соответственно, это "_шахтная_ плавильная печь". Прошу извинить за то, что ввел в заблуждение.
