In a 1973 inventor's certificate on improving drilling muds, specifically improving the пластическая прочность by adding various surfactants, the improvement is measured over a specified time, the время тиксотропного упрочнения, which in turn is given in minutes, or hours, or days. What is important for mud properties is the value of the пластическая прочность after various periods of times (время тиксотропного упрочнения), but I am unable to come with a name for the process (тиксотропное упрочнение) that is occurring.
I am not able to give much context, because most of the actual information is gleaned from the tables. FWIW, the пластическая прочность is measured in unit of force per unit of area.

You're right, grout is different from drilling mud in that regard. I couldn't find any references to how thixotropy is measured for drilling mud. :( In theory, "setting time" might work because the mud gets less viscous with shear, then becomes more viscous again (sets) after time without shear.

| Thanks for your response. I'm not quite sure about this, though, since it relates to grout, which does set - becomes firm and then hard. Drilling mud needs to be viscous enough to carry cuttings out of the well, but thin enough to be pumpable. I could be wrong, but I don't think it ever "sets." Thanks for your response.
