A government department recently described that it offered employees a leave of absence. It reported that a leave of absence without pay was granted for reasons that included serious matters in the employee's family, personal work circumstances, employee education plans, or if a spouse was transferred to a new location. The department reported how several policies applied to whether an employee could receive a leave of absence. It said that, after 5 years of full-time service, an employee could be granted a leave of absence at the department’s discretion. All outstanding vacation time saved needed to be used prior to commencing the leave of absence. Leaves of absence would only be granted for a maximum of 6 months. Vacation and sick time would not accrue while on personal leave, and holiday pay would not be paid while on personal leave.
