Dear ProZ members,
I have a little question about this sentence:
兵士が半数を切ることは予想しておらんかったな
Of course, it means something like "I didn't expect that half of the soldiers would have been defeated".
I was wondering, however, about the precise meaning of the verb 切る. Is this some particular use, meaning "to truncate" as in "truncating a linK", or is it totally normal to use this verb in this context?
Thanks for your help!

半数を切る
「数値・パーセント等を切る」means to drop below (number, percent, etc.)
So, without any additional context besides the sentence you provided above, I would understand it to mean "I didn't expect that the number of soldiers would drop below half".
To answer your question about "truncate", using "truncate" in this context would sound a little strange as it is not a commonly used term outside of the field of mathematics and the author is using 口語.
I posted a link to a site that shows a few example sentences using the word "truncate".
