I've now found a relevant French text, which seems to clarify what this is about. It would, of course, have helped had the Asker provided adequate context. (Why is that failure becoming more and more frequent?)

This was complicated by the fact that férrage usually means fitting hardware to joinery.

comme l'a fait remarquer Barbara, il serait utile de savoir de quoi on parle
L'expression "à frais" pourrait être inspirée de "a fresco" terme italien qui en français comme en anglais désigne le recouvrement avant prise du support:

Pour l'outil je dirais "jointer", mais pour l'opération "ferrer", "to joint"me paraît insuffisant, les collègues anglophones auront sûrement une meilleure idée
