Swedish term

gubbsjuk/gumsjuk

Swedish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
This comes from a book a review where the reviewer accuses the author of being "gumsjuk" (i.e., the female form of gubbsjuk). Gubbsjuk - being an older man looking at and coveting women/girls far too young for him - is commonly used in Swedish and I suppose it would be translated as lecherous or something to that effect. The question, however, is how to distinguish between the male and female form of this, as the reviewer makes a point of doing so...

Discussion

John Krause Mar 21, 2019:
Gubbsjuk is not nearly as negative as lecherous. It's even a little sympathetic, with a hint of acknowledging the loneliness. Lechery leads to assault, but gubbsjuka leads to pathetic leering.
I find cougar to be blatantly misogynist: it assumes a double standard for men and women. There's no negative word for the older man with the much younger partner.
Christopher Schröder Mar 15, 2019:
Would "dirty old woman" or even "old perv" fit? I don't think there's a direct equivalent in BrE.
ehnsio (asker) Mar 15, 2019:
I'd say it's more "nasty". The reviewer seems to imply that the (older) author is lusting after one of the younger male characters in the book. It's definitely more about sex and desire than a midlife crisis.
Deane Goltermann Mar 15, 2019:
Have seen your term used both as you describe and more mildly as describing someone experiencing a 'midlife crisis.' Is your context milder or 'nastier'?

cougar

I'll go with this one, then... as I've referenced in the discussion. Slang to match the Swe slang.

As applies to women, of course. Plenty of terms for older guys, tho.

neutral Agneta Pallinder : I just have a sense that cougar is too flattering - the Urban Dictionary uses adjectives like "hot", "experienced" about the cougar. "Gubbsjuk" is always an expression of contempt, wouldn't you say?

A complete read of both references indicates there are negative usage for my suggestion. That is, different than some media popularization
neutral Tania McConaghy : agree with Agneta, I think "cougar" is a positive term - something like "wow, she is middle-aged but still attractive to younger men"

neutral Christopher Schröder : For BrE at least I agree with the others

Right, the Canadian connection for this word isn't enough for BrE
agree Adrian MM. : For common BrE usage, see https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/search.html?sel=site&search...

Thanks, Adrian! This is a tough one... terms used around the world to mean widely different things in similar contexts...

On second thoughts, perhaps it should rather be "a female old lech".
