denied Explanation: I would keep it simple and go with *denied* between the "*.......*" and read it in a fashion whereby the two pillars have been rejected by a commisssion or the authorities involved. |

broken Explanation: Actually, the word means "severed", but it is enough if the column cannot carry its intended load any longer. An intermediate support for a bridge, e.g. in a motorway over- or underpass, typically consists of a row of circular columns. The designer may choose between showing that each column can take the force from a crashing vehicle (as specified) and showing that the intermediate support will continue to function and carry at least a reduced design load (as specified) even if one or two of its columns are broken by the crash. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2007-07-18 12:33:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Avslagen" is a tricky word - there is "avslagen ansökan" = denied request, and "avslaget öl" = stale beer, i.e. completely different meanings from the one intended here.
