floating point numbers
A term used in the computer science to describe a number which is partly defined by a whole number (say 5) and partly by an exponent (say 2 to the power of 3). The "flyttal" would in this trivial case be 5*2**3=5*8=40. The floating point numbers are in reality only used for VERY large or VERY small numbers (which otherwise could not be hanled by the computer).
