Lexicography - Translation

Full name: Nick Lingris
Born on the island of Crete in 1948.

Studies:
Dropped out of: English Literature (University of Athens)
Almost finished: International Affairs (University of London)

Previous employment:
1966-75: Teacher of English in Athens (7 of those years at my own little private school). Eventually got fed up teaching.
1975-76: Australian Embassy in Athens (translator-interpreter) – boring
1976-80: Programme Assistant, Greek Section, BBC External Services, London – exciting, but then my wife got sick of the English weather
1980-90: Compendium Bookshop, Athens (private venture)
1987-90: Compendium Computers, Athens (private adventure)
1990-present: Freelancing from the Athens suburb of Drosia (writing EFL books and dictionaries most of the time, and doing translation work for UK agencies on the side as well as editing books for Greek publishers who are good friends)
2000-2001, 2003-2004: Head quizmaster for Greek version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ plus a couple of other TV quiz shows

Publications:
1975: General Editorial Supervision, Penguin-Hellenews English-Greek dictionary (a classic which is sadly out of print, but GWord’s English-Greek section is based on it)
1980: Children’s English-Greek Dictionary (Galaios Publications)
1981-95: EFL Course books and companion books (Z & G Zacharopoulos)
1989: Omega English Learner’s Dictionary (Omega ELT Publications)
1996: English-Greek Learner’s Dictionary The First (Fytrakis)
1998: Children’s English-Greek Dictionary JUNIOR (Fytrakis)
1998: English-Greek section of WizCom Technologies' Translation Dictionary (what comes up in answers.com)
2000: English-Greek Dictionary for Advanced Learners SYNCHRONO (Fytrakis)
2001: Βιβλίο «Ποιος θέλει να γίνει σοφότερος (αν όχι εκατομμυριούχος);»
2005: Edited new edition of English-Greek Greek-English Dictionary of Financial Terms by J. Chryssovitsiotis and J. Stavrakopoulos

Forthcoming projects: More dictionaries and reference books.
Involvement in the English-Greek distance translation course at www.metafrasi.edu.gr
Teaching the lexicography seminar at meta|φραση

Translation work:
1978-1980: While in London, for a number of UK agencies, on the old IBM Golfball.
1997-present: From my Drosia office, thanks to the Internet, for UK agencies again.
Former associate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.

I have also translated or edited the translation of a number of books for Greek publishers, mostly novels or social science titles, such as: [translation from Greek] Macedonia and the Balkans: Xenophobia and Development (National Centre for Social Research, 1999); [translation from English] Robert L. Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers (Kritiki, 2000); [revised translation from English] J.M. Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello (Diigisi, 2004).

I have a huge collection of reference books, in printed or electronic form.
I do my own DTP on Ventura, and have been using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, CorelDraw, Ventura, etc. for donkey’s years.

Personal interests:
- Computers as tools and the Internet as a way to access the vast world of knowledge out there and to communicate with people (pity it wasn’t around when I was younger)
- Cinema, music, books (mostly non-fiction now), history, political economy, politics (like most Greek men), only a little football (unlike most Greek men) and the occasional foray into the world of science (at the Bill Bryson / Richard Dawkins level).
- Rationalism and the debunking of myths

Family:
Married to Vicky for an unbelievably long 31 years
Two kids: Alexander (22), owner of www.webz.gr.com, Elvira (18), both adorable (of course).

Joined ProZ: End of April 2005
