All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Όλα τα ταξίδια δεν είναι πια τίποτα άλλο παρά ένας τρόπος να μετακινείς μια φωτογραφική μηχανή από το ένα μέρος στο άλλο, με τον πανίσχυρο φωτογραφικό φακό να καταδυναστεύει όλους τους ταξιδιώτες. Οι περιηγητές της παλιάς σχολής, που τους αρκεί να στέκονται και να κοιτάζουν με τα αναχρονιστικά τους μάτια, παραμερίζονται από τους φωτογράφους, οι οποίοι θεωρούν αυτονόητο ότι κανένας και τίποτα δεν μπορεί να διασχίζει ή να εμποδίζει το οπτικό τους πεδίο την ώρα που αυτοί φτιάχνουν το τελετουργικό τους κάδρο. Κάθε ταλαίπωρος χωρίς δική του μηχανή πρέπει να κάνει στην άκρη για αυτούς που έχουν σοβαρό έργο να επιτελέσουν, πρέπει να περιμένει να ολοκληρωθεί το τελετουργικό και να κάνει υπομονή κάθε φορά που ολόκληρο το πούλμαν σταματά για να εξαπολύσει στο τοπίο τον Θεό με την Ινσταμάτικ. Και οι πληθυσμοί ολόκληρων χωρών, βλέποντας να πέφτουν θύματα κανιβάλων που τους κάνουν μια χαψιά και τους ρουφούν μέσα από το γουρλωμένο μάτι με τον μαύρο δακτύλιο, αρπάζουν με τη σειρά τους ό,τι καταφέρουν από τους κανίβαλους. Θες φωτογραφία με σπίτι μου, με καμήλα μου; Μπαξίς.
Ίσως τίποτα απ’ αυτά δεν θα πείραζε αν υπήρχε κάποιο σημαντικό όφελος. Αν όλη αυτή η υπερδραστηριότητα και το κλικ-κλικ-κλικ απέδιδε στο τέλος κάτι που δεν υπήρχε πριν, εικόνες που απαθανατίζουν ομορφιές ή λένε αλήθειες. Αλλά, φευ, μηδέν εις το πηλίκον. Η φωτογραφική μηχανή δεν είναι παρά μια εξευγενισμένη εκδοχή του γκράφιτι.
Είναι ο τρόπος να αφήνουμε το αποτύπωμά μας πάνω σε οτιδήποτε βλέπουμε, με το πρόσχημα ότι καταγράφουμε τα Θαύματα του Κόσμου, κι ας τα έχουν ήδη καταγράψει, με τρόπο θαυμαστό, οι επαγγελματίες φωτογράφοι, κι ας πουλιούνται σε κάθε γωνιακό βιβλιοπωλείο και περίπτερο. Αλλά βέβαια, τι νόημα έχει να γυρίσουμε πίσω και να δείξουμε στη θεία Μοντ φωτογραφίες του τοσκανικού τοπίου αν δεν βρισκόμαστε κι εμείς μέσα στο κάδρο, να αποδείξουμε ότι ήμασταν εκεί;
Κανένα κατσάβραχο δεν έχει αληθοφάνεια αν δεν είμαι μέσα του. Κανένα μνημείο δεν υφίσταται αν δεν γέρνει πάνω του η σύζυγός μου. Κανένας ναός δεν έχει ενδιαφέρον χωρίς τη χαμογελαστή μου φάτσα δίπλα του. Με τη φωτογραφική μου μηχανή οικειοποιούμαι καθετί όμορφο, το κάνω κτήμα μου, το συρρικνώνω, το τιθασεύω και το αναπαράγω στον γυμνό τοίχο του σαλονιού μου για να αποδείξω στο επίλεκτο κοινό των φίλων και συγγενών αυτό που μετράει πάνω απ’ όλα σε σχέση με αυτά τα αξιοθέατα: τα είδα, ήμουν εκεί, τα φωτογράφισα, άρα υπάρχουν.

Heathrow Airport is one of the few places in England you can be sure of seeing a gun. These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...)
Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. Coats, shirts, T-shirts, jeans, suits; like slept-in pyjamas. (...)
I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.
Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. These friends of ours are primarily Ally’s friends. I don’t seem to know anyone anymore, and away from the children and the overhead planes, hearing myself think, I hear the thoughts of a whinger. This is not what I had been hoping to hear.
I start crying, not grimacing or sobbing, just big silent tears rolling down my cheeks. I don’t want anyone I know to see me crying, because I’m not the kind of person who cracks up at Heathrow airport some nothing Tuesday morning. I manage our house impeccably, like a business. It’s a serious job. I have spreadsheets to monitor the hoover-bag situation and colour-coded print-outs about the ethical consequences of nappies. I am not myself this morning. Το αεροδρόμιο του Χίθροου είναι ένα από τα ελάχιστα μέρη στην Αγγλία όπου είναι βέβαιο ότι θα δεις πιστόλια. Τα πιστόλια αυτά τα φέρουν αστυνομικοί με κοντομάνικα πουκάμισα και μαύρα αλεξίσφαιρα γιλέκα, σε επιφυλακή για τρομοκράτες που ετοιμάζονται να ανατινάξουν την μπουτίκ με τις γραβάτες. Είναι απίθανο να σταματήσουν εμένα για έλεγχο, αλλά, αν συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο, θα τους πω την αλήθεια. Θα τους εξηγήσω για ποιο λόγο βρίσκομαι εκεί. Σκοπεύω να μείνω στο αεροδρόμιο του Χίθροου μέχρι να δω κάποιον που να τον γνωρίζω. […]

Οι πιο πρόσφατοι μυαλωμένοι φίλοι μας, που έχουν σοβαρές δουλειές και που συνεπώς δεν αποκλείω να τους συναντήσω εδώ από στιγμή σε στιγμή, μου λένε ότι η οικοκυρική είναι μια καθόλα αξιοπρεπής ασχολία για έναν άνδρα, ακόμα και ένδειξη γενναιότητας, ναι, ανδρείας, να μένεις στο σπίτι με τα παιδιά. Αυτοί οι φίλοι μας είναι κυρίως φίλοι της Άλι. Νιώθω σαν να μην ξέρω κανέναν πια και, μακριά από τα παιδιά και τα αεροπλάνα που πετάνε αποπάνω, καθώς ακούω τον εαυτό μου να σκέφτεται, ακούω τις σκέψεις ενός μεμψίμοιρου γκρινιάρη. Δεν είναι οι σκέψεις που ήλπιζα να ακούσω.
Αρχίζω να κλαίω – όχι με μορφασμούς ή με λυγμούς, αλλά με μεγάλα σιωπηλά δάκρυα που κυλούν στα μάγουλά μου. Δεν θέλω να με δει κάποιος γνωστός να κλαίω, γιατί δεν είμαι ο τύπος του ανθρώπου που βάζει τα κλάματα στο αεροδρόμιο του Χίθροου μια άσχετη Τρίτη πρωί. Κάνω τέλεια διαχείριση του σπιτιού μας, σαν να είναι επιχείρηση. Είναι σοβαρή δουλειά. Έχω λογιστικά φύλλα στον υπολογιστή στα οποία παρακολουθώ τα αποθέματα από τις σακούλες της ηλεκτρικής σκούπας, και εκτυπώσεις με χρωματική κωδικοποίηση για τις ηθικές επιπτώσεις της χρήσης της πάνας. Είμαι άλλος άνθρωπος σήμερα. Δεν ξέρω ποιος είμαι.

Το παλιό σχολειό
Το κείμενο ανήκει στη συλλογή Εφήβων και μη (1982).
Στο βάθος μιας μεγάλης αυλής με πεντέξι ψηλά πεύκα βρισκόταν το παμπάλαιο γυμνάσιό μας. Αριστερά, καθώς πλησίαζες, ήταν το υπόστεγο της γυμναστικής, δεξιά διάφορα άλλα χρειώδη κτίσματα. Στο υπόστεγο κάναμε γυμναστική όταν έβρεχε. Αν ήταν όμως δυνατή η βροχή, βροντολογούσαν αποπάνω οι λαμαρίνες και ήταν αδύνατο ν’ ακούσεις τα παραγγέλματα. Αφήνω πως η βροχή μπαίνοντας απ’ το πλάι μάς έπαιρνε ξυστά και μας έκαμνε χάλια. Στο υπόστεγο βρίσκονταν τα διάφορα σύνεργα της γυμναστικής. Τα μονόζυγα, τα εφαλτήρια, οι βατήρες, το πλινθίο και η μακριά γαϊδούρα, που με έκπληξή μου έμαθα αργότερα ότι επίσημα ονομάζεται γυμναστικός ίππος. Είμαι βέβαιος όμως ότι η ονομασία των παιδιών ήταν πολύ περισσότερο πετυχημένη. Όλα αυτά μας ήταν πιο αγαπητά απ’ το μάθημα, ιδιαίτερα τα μονόζυγα. Κρεμιόμασταν αποκεί και δεν θέλαμε να κατεβούμε.
Στα πεύκα σύχναζαν κάργες, δεκαοχτούρες και κάμπιες άφθονες. Οι δεκαοχτούρες είχαν τις φωλιές τους στο γειτονικό νεκροταφείο. Την ώρα που κάμναμε μάθημα, σκόρπιζαν με το σκούξιμό τους έναν τόνο απαλότητας και θλίψης, που δεν αγγίζει όμως τα παιδιά. Οι κάργες πάλι με τα ληστρικά μάτια και το κλονισμένο βάδισμα φώλιαζαν κοπιαδιαστά στα κεραμίδια ενός τεράστιου μακρόστενου σπιτιού, παλιού νοσοκομείου ίσως, που έφραζε ανατολικά το προαύλιο μας και που τώρα κατοικούνταν από προσφυγικές οικογένειες. Πολλούς καβγάδες, πολλούς ξυλοδαρμούς και ξεμαλλιάσματα είχαμε παρακολουθήσει ανάμεσα στις οικογένειες, που τις έδερνε η φτώχεια και η κοινή συγκατοίκηση. Οι κάργες πάντως ήταν αγαπημένες μεταξύ τους, τσακώνονταν όμως άγρια με τις δεκαοχτούρες. Και το περίεργο είναι πως τα αβρά αυτά πουλιά κατάφερναν πάντα να τρέπουν σε φυγή τις κάργες, που τα νύχια και το ράμφος τους είναι να τα φοβάται ακόμα κι ο άνθρωπος.
Τα πουλιά κατέβαιναν απ’ τα δέντρα μόλις εμείς μπαίναμε στις τάξεις. Τόσα παιδιά που ήμασταν όλο και κάτι το φαγώσιμο πετούσαμε. Το ίδια παρατήρησα αργότερα, όταν ήμουν στρατιώτης στην Κόρινθο. Μόλις οι λόχοι έφευγαν για ασκήσεις, το στρατόπεδο γέμιζε πουλιά, ιδίως κοράκια. Οι φαντάροι, βέβαια πετούν πολύ περισσότερα πράγματα. Εμείς άλλωστε ήμασταν φτωχά παιδιά, λαϊκών συνοικιών. Δεν είχαμε παραπάνω από ένα πενηνταράκι ή το πολύ φράγκο. Κι αυτά με πολύ ζόρι, ακόμα και κλάμα, εξοικονομημένα. Τι είχαμε λοιπόν και τι να πετάξουμε; Όταν όμως κάμναμε παρέλαση και σμίγαμε με τα άλλα σχολεία, τότε φαινόταν η υπεροχή μας. Είχαμε πάντα τον καλύτερο σημαιοφόρο και οι παραστάτες μας ήταν όλοι λεβεντόπαιδα. Δεν παραλείπαμε, βέβαια, να αποκαλέσουμε τους άλλους σοκολατόπαιδα ή βουτυρόπαιδα, οπότε δημιουργούνταν άγριες προστριβές. Η λιτή ζωή έχει και τα καλά της. Λίγο πριν απ’ τον πόλεμο, το κράτος επικήρυξε τις κάργες, τρία φράγκα το κεφάλι. Είχαν καταντήσει μεγάλη πληγή. Κι έτσι πολύ συχνά, ενώ κάναμε μάθημα, βλέπαμε ξαφνικά τις κάργες να πέφτουν απ’ τα δέντρα και να σωριάζονται σαν κουρελόπανα στο χώμα. Τις χτυπούσαν με αθόρυβα φλομπεράκια αόρατοι κυνηγοί. Καμιά φορά γινόταν λάθος και χτυπούσαν δεκαοχτούρες. Αυτές τις λυπόμασταν.
Τη μέρα που κηρύχτηκε ο πόλεμος με τους Ιταλούς —Δευτέρα ήταν— εμείς πήγαμε όπως πάντα στο σχολείο, μολονότι ξέραμε. Το κουδούνι χτύπησε κανονικά, και σαν συνταχτήκαμε, εμφανίστηκε στο κεφαλόσκαλο ο γυμνασιάρχης, πιο επίσημος από κάθε άλλη φορά, περιστοιχισμένος απ’ τους καθηγητές, όπως ο δεσπότης, όταν ιερουργεί, απ’ τους παπάδες. Τη στιγμή εκείνη πετούσαν αεροπλάνα πάνω απ’ τα κεφάλια μας. Παίρνοντας αφορμή απ’ αυτά, ο γυμνασιάρχης μας μίλησε, όσο ποτέ καλύτερα, για την Ελλάδα. Κλαίγαμε από ενθουσιασμό, πετούσαμε τα πηλήκια ψηλά ζητωκραυγάζοντας. Σ’ εκείνον τον πόλεμο δεν πολεμήσαμε εμείς, αλλά οι πατέρες και τ’ αδέρφια μας. Νιώσαμε όμως όλοι μας βαθιά τις συνέπειές του.
Ήταν γραφτό το κουδούνι του σχολείου να το ξανακούσουμε το άλλο φθινόπωρο και μάλιστα σε άλλο κτίριο. Ολόκληρο το γυμνάσιο αναγκάστηκε να στριμωχτεί σ’ ένα μικρό και ετοιμόρροπο οίκημα που το χρησιμοποιούσαμε ως τότε για παράρτημα μόνο. Το παλιό μας σχολείο το είχε επιτάξει ο στρατός κατοχής και το ’κανε όρχο αυτοκινήτων. Τους βόλευε, φαίνεται, ο μεγάλος αυλόγυρος. Όλα αυτά συνέβησαν μες στο απαίσιο εκείνο καλοκαίρι του ’41.
Ο ένας με τον άλλον ειδοποιηθήκαμε ξαφνικά να παρουσιαστούμε οπωσδήποτε την άλλη μέρα στο σχολείο. Βρήκαμε τον γυμνασιάρχη και τους καθηγητές σε απόγνωση. Εμείς κρυφοκοιτάζαμε με χαρά τους καθηγητές, που είχαν γυρίσει όλοι, ευτυχώς, σώοι απ’ το μέτωπο. Πάντως, η πρόσκλησή μας σε άλλα απέβλεπε: Έπρεπε μέσα στη μέρα να μεταφερθούν και να αποθηκευτούν κάπου αλλού τα πάντα· θρανία, έδρες, γραφεία, βιβλιοθήκες, πίνακες και γενικώς όλος ο εξοπλισμός του σχολείου. Οι Γερμανοί θέλαν αμέσως το κτίριο.
Για μεταφορικά μέσα, κάρα ή αυτοκίνητα, δεν μπορούσε φυσικά να γίνει λόγος. Πιάσαμε λοιπόν δυο δυο παιδιά τα θρανία και με την επίβλεψη των καθηγητών αρχίσαμε τη μεταφορά τους. Γέμισε ο δρόμος, που άλλωστε δεν παρουσίαζε καμιά κίνηση, από θρανία και έδρες. Τέτοια πομπή δεν είχε ξαναδιασχίσει την Αγίου Δημητρίου κι ας ήταν ένας απ’ τους κυριότερους δρόμους που οδηγούσαν στο νεκροταφείο, την Ευαγγελίστρια. Ο κόσμος σταματούσε στα πεζοδρόμια και κοίταζε με οδύνη και σεβασμό το πρωτοφανές θέαμα. Δεν ήταν και λίγο πράγμα. Διώχνονταν απ’ το κτίριό του ένα γυμνάσιο, εξατάξιο γυμνάσιο, εννοείται. Πολλοί απ’ αυτούς που μας έβλεπαν πρέπει να ήταν απόφοιτοι αυτού του γυμνασίου.
Είδα έναν γηραλέο κύριο να βγάζει το καπέλο του στο πέρασμά μας. Άλλοι πάλι χαμογελούσαν πικρά, σαν να έλεγαν: Αυτό θα πει σκλαβιά. Εμείς κάθε τόσο κάναμε στάση, τα χέρια μας κόβονταν απ’ την κούραση· ήταν και η πείνα, δεν τρεφόμασταν καλά. Οι καθηγητές μας πήγαιναν απ’ τα πεζοδρόμια φαρμακωμένοι.
Έτσι όπως σταματούσαμε όλοι μαζί και καθόμασταν στα θρανία για να ξεκουραστούμε, είχαμε την εντύπωση πως θα ’ρχιζε κάποιο μάθημα. Και πράγματι, δυο παιδιά που κουβαλούσαν τον ανθρώπινο πλαστικό σκελετό του σχολείου, πήγαν και τον έστησαν πάνω σε μια έδρα. Τότε μονάχα έγινε αισθητή η παρουσία των καθηγητών. Τα ταλαιπωρημένα εκείνα θρανία μας, τα βασανισμένα ξύλα με τις βαθιές χαρακιές, με τα ονόματά μας χαραγμένα με σουγιάδες και ξουράφια, με άλλα ονόματα αγαπημένα και ομάδες ποδοσφαιρικές —ΠΑΟΚ, ΑΡΗΣ, ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ— τα κλείσαμε στο υπόγειο ενός κτιρίου μακρινού και μισοτελειωμένου και φύγαμε με τα χέρια αδειανά.
Αργότερα, όταν ήρθε πάλι ο καιρός κι ανοίξαν τα σχολεία και βρεθήκαμε στριμωγμένοι στο «Παράρτημα», όπου κάμναμε μάθημα μέρα παρά μέρα κι εκείνο από τρεις ώρες τη φορά, αρχίσαμε να νοσταλγούμε έντονα το παλιό σχολείο μας, που ήταν άνετο, που ήταν σκιερό και δροσερό σαν πηγάδι, κι ας είχε πατώματα τριμμένα και σκάλες ετοιμόρροπες, πρόσοψη λερωμένη απ’ τις λασπωμένες μπαλιές και λεκέδες απ’ τα μελανοδοχεία,, που κατά το έθιμο σπάζαμε στους τοίχους, κρυφά εννοείται, μετά το τελευταίο διαγώνισμα του Ιουνίου. Κι όταν το ’φερνε ο δρόμος, κοντοστεκόμασταν έξω απ’ το παλιό σχολείο, μα πολύ γρήγορα, βλέποντας τη σιλουέτα του Γερμανού σκοπού να αργοσαλεύει, αναγκαζόμασταν να απομακρυνθούμε.
Ήταν τόση η στεναχώρια μας, ώστε ξεσπούσαμε μέσα στις εκθέσεις. Θυμάμαι τον φιλόλογό μας να μας συμβουλεύει καταφοβισμένος: «Μη γράφετε στις εκθέσεις σας για τις αρχές κατοχής. Δεν είμαι εγώ ο αρμόδιος». Τώρα στην τάξη μας είχαμε και αρκετά παιδιά απ’ την Ανατολική Μακεδονία, που οι οικογένειές τους είχαν φύγει αποκεί για να γλιτώσουν απ’ τους Βουλγάρους.
Την άλλη χρονιά, έτσι όπως το πήραν, με την ίδια ευκολία το εγκατέλειψαν το σχολείο μας. Κουβαλήσαμε τα θρανία με φωνές και γέλια. Μέσα στο παλιό κτίριο ξαναβρήκαμε τα νερά μας. Παρά την πείνα και τα κυνηγητά, αρχίσαμε να διαβάζουμε και να μαθαίνουμε. Ήταν, βέβαια, πόνος ψυχής να μαθαίνεις τα μετά γενικής και δοτικής συντασσόμενα ρήματα στο ρυθμό της γερμανικής μπότας, αλλά οι καθηγητές μας επέμεναν ιδιαίτερα, σαν να εξαρτιόταν απ’ αυτό η σωτηρία της πατρίδας.
Αργότερα, μας το ξαναπήραν οι Γερμανοί το σχολείο και πάλι κουβαλήσαμε τα θρανία στη γνωστή αποθήκη. Αλλ’ αυτή τη φορά ήμασταν σοφότεροι. Πιστεύαμε πως είναι ζήτημα λίγου χρόνου η οριστική επιστροφή μας. Κι όταν μάλιστα ένα βαρύ απομεσήμερο του Ιουνίου, που είχαμε διαγώνισμα στα λατινικά, διαδόθηκε πως έγινε η απόβαση στη Νορμανδία, ήμασταν βέβαιοι πια πως από του χρόνου θα ήμαστε ελεύθεροι και φυσικά στο σχολείο μας. Η Γερμανία κατέρρεε απ’ όλες τις μεριές.
Η απελευθέρωση μάς πέτυχε στην προτελευταία τάξη, την εβδόμη γυμνασίου. Τότε μονάχα μπορέσαμε να κοιτάξουμε γύρω μας. Και αντικρίσαμε το χάος. Όχι μονάχα δεν προετοιμαζόμασταν για καμιά επιστήμη, αλλά ούτε καν είχαμε αποφασίσει τι θα σπουδάσουμε. Κάποτε, βέβαια, όλοι μας κάτι είχαμε διαλέξει, στην τύχη, αλλά το λησμονήσαμε μέσα στις αλλεπάλληλες κακουχίες.
Η πρώτη φορά που θυμάμαι συμμαθητή μου να μίλησε για το τι θα σπουδάσει ήταν όταν διασχίζοντας τον κήπο ενός νοσοκομείου πηγαίναμε σ’ έναν άλλο συμμαθητή μας, που είχε πέσει στα νύχια μιας βαριάς αρρώστιας, κι απ’ την οποία σε λίγο πέθανε. «Όταν θα γίνω γιατρός, θ’ ανακαλύψω το φάρμακο», είπε. Μου φάνηκε αστεία αυτή η δήλωσή του. Μολονότι μικρά παιδιά είχαμε συνηθίσει να μη λέμε μεγάλα λόγια. Πάντως, το παιδί αυτό πράγματι έγινε γιατρός, αλλά το φάρμακο αποτελεί ακόμα όνειρο της ανθρωπότητας.
Λίγοι έγιναν αυτό που είπαν. Εμένα οι δικοί μου μου βάλαν την ιδέα να γίνω κτηνίατρος. Ένιωθα ανέκαθεν μια κλίση προς τα ζώα, αν και δεν είχαμε στο σπίτι ούτε γάτα. Μόλις το ανακοίνωσα στο σχολείο, τα παιδιά με ονόμασαν «χαϊβάν-ντόκτορ». Ή με φώναζαν απλώς «γιατρέ μου, γιατρέ μου», παίρνοντας το πρώτο συνθετικό απάνω τους. Δε με πείραζαν οι προσφωνήσεις αυτές, εγώ ήμουν ικανότερος απ’ αυτούς στις γελοιοποιήσεις. Απλώς όμως δεν υπήρχε τότε κτηνιατρική σχολή στην πόλη μας κι έτσι το σχέδιο ματαιώθηκε.
Τότε που τελειώσαμε, μεγάλη υπόληψη είχε το επάγγελμα τον γιατρού. Κατόπιν ερχόταν τον δικηγόρου. Του καθηγητή ήταν πολύ ξεπεσμένο οικονομικά, του δασκάλου ακόμα χειρότερα. Και φυσικά οι μεγάλοι που αντιμετωπίζουν σχεδόν πάντα τα πράγματα από την πρακτική τους άποψη, μας πίεζαν να γίνουμε γιατροί ή δικηγόροι. Η μανία με το Πολυτεχνείο παρουσιάστηκε αργότερα, όταν άρχισε η ανοικοδόμηση της χώρας. Όχι βέβαια, πως οι μηχανικοί ή οι μηχανολόγοι δεν έβγαζαν χρήματα, αλλά το όνειρο αυτό, καθώς δεν υπήρχε Πολυτεχνείο στην πόλη μας, ήταν τόσο άπιαστο και τόσο ακριβό, ώστε οι μεγάλοι απόφευγαν να φέρουν το λόγο σ’ αυτά τα επικίνδυνα θέματα. Πολλά παιδιά ακολουθούσαν τις ιδέες των μεγάλων κατά γράμμα. Και το περίεργο είναι ότι πιο πειθήνια στις ιδέες των μεγαλυτέρων αποδείχτηκαν όχι τα ήσυχα και τα μαμόθρεφτα, όπως θα περίμενε κανείς, αλλά κάτι ζωηρότατα πλάσματα, που νόμιζες ότι ποτέ και κανέναν δεν πρόκειται ν’ ακούσουν. Αντίθετα, οι αθόρυβοι εννοούσαν να κάνουν το δικό τους, μη λογαριάζοντας αμοιβές και ξακουστά επαγγέλματα.
Μετά από πολλές συζητήσεις, αποφασίσαμε μ’ ένα συμμαθητή μου να δώσουμε στη φιλολογία. Διαβάζαμε πολλή λογοτεχνία, είχαμε ζαλιστεί με τα τόσα αριστουργήματα και νομίζαμε πως φιλολογία και λογοτεχνία είναι το ίδιο πράγμα. Θα περνούσαμε τη ζωή μας μέσα σε μια διαρκή αποκάλυψη.
Τολμήσαμε να πλησιάσουμε τον φιλόλογο. «Ώστε θέλετε να πάτε στη Φιλοσοφική Σχολή;» μας είπε. Κοιταχτήκαμε ενθουσιασμένοι. Ποτέ μας δεν είχαμε ακούσει ότι το άλλο όνομα της Φιλολογίας ήταν «Φιλοσοφική Σχολή». Αυτό πια ήτανε ένας ακόμα λόγος. Αλλά ο φιλόλογός μας συνέχισε αμείλικτος: «Να πάτε, μας είπε, καλά είναι. Αλλά να ξέρετε πως πολλά ψωμιά και φαγιά το επάγγελμα αυτό δεν έχει». Μιλούσε ο άνθρωπος με εικόνες της κατοχής.
Πάντως, οι χοντράδες αυτές μας κλόνισαν. Εγώ τις επόμενες μέρες ξαναγύρισα στο προσφιλές μου όνειρο για την κτηνιατρική. Κι εφόσον Κτηνιατρική Σχολή δεν υπήρχε, συμβιβάστηκα μέσα μου με τη γεωπονία. Ζώα και φυτά είναι συγγενικά πράγματα. Ο άλλος βρήκε καταφύγιο στη νομική, που από καιρό τη σκεφτόταν σαν εναλλακτική λύση. Μάλιστα άρχισε να κατηχεί στην ιδέα του κι εμένα κι ως ένα σημείο πήρε να με λυγίζει.
Όλα αυτά τα πράγματα, αυτές οι απότομες αλλαγές, μου δημιουργούσαν μια πολύ δυσάρεστη διάθεση. Τις νύχτες δεν μπορούσα να κοιμηθώ απ’ την αγωνία. Ήθελα να βρω το δρόμο μου και να προχωρήσω. Ένα πρωινό πήγαμε στο Πανεπιστήμιο και τρυπώσαμε σε μια παράδοση της Νομικής. Εμένα το μάθημα μού φάνηκε ιδιαίτερα ανιαρό, δεν χρειαζόμουν πια τίποτε άλλο για να απορρίψω αυτή την ιδέα. Ο άλλος γοητεύτηκε και τελικά έδωσε σ’ αυτή την επιστήμη. Σήμερα είναι ένας αξιοσέβαστος δικαστής. Ποτέ δεν μετανόησα γι’ αυτή την απόφασή μου.
Δειλά δειλά ζήτησα ακρόαση από τον γυμνασιάρχη. Ήταν φιλόλογος και διακρινόταν για τον ζωηρό θεατρικό τρόπο με τον οποίο μιλούσε. Του είπα τα βάσανά μου, τη φοβερή ψυχική ταλαιπωρία μου. Του είπα ότι ήθελα να πάω στη φιλολογία, αλλά με είχαν τρομοκρατήσει, κι έτσι κι έτσι άρχισα να σκέφτομαι τη γεωπονία, μα ένιωθα μέσα μου ένα φοβερό διχασμό. Με άκουσε με προσοχή. Ύστερα, σήκωσε τα χέρια του προς τον ουρανό και είπε δραματικά: «Για όνομα Θεού, παιδί μου, θ’ αφήσεις το γάμο, να πας για τα πουρνάρια;».
Αυτό ήταν, δεν ήθελα άλλο τίποτε. Στρώθηκα το καλοκαιράκι στη μελέτη και το φθινόπωρο ήμουν πρωτοετής φοιτητής της φιλολογίας. Παρ’ όλες τις δυσκολίες και τις κακοπάθειες, ποτέ μου δεν ξανακοίταξα πίσω.

The Old School

Our old rundown high school stood at the bottom of a large yard containing half a dozen tall pine trees. To the visitor’s left, lay the gymnastics shed, to the right various other outbuildings. We would have our sports activities in the gym shed when it rained. But if the rain was heavy, the corrugated iron roof thundered above, making it impossible to hear any of the instructor’s commands—not forgetting how some of us got drenched by the rain sneaking in from the sides. The shed also housed our gymnastic apparatus: the bars, the vaults, the springing boards, the beam, and the “long donkey”, whose proper name, as I learnt later much to my surprise, was vaulting horse. I’m certain, though, that the name given by the children was much more appropriate. It was these objects which were more endearing to us than the lesson itself—the horizontal bars in particular. We would just hang from them and not want to come down.
The pines served as the perch for jackdaws and collared doves, and the house of numerous caterpillars. The doves had made their nests in the neighbouring cemetery. During our lesson time, their cooing would release a sad and gentle feeling, which nevertheless failed to reach the children. The jackdaws, on the other hand, with their predatory eyes and tottering walk, settled in groups within the shingles of a huge, oblong house, probably an old hospital, which blocked the front courtyard from the east and was now inhabited by families of refugees. We had witnessed lots of loud arguments, fighting and hair-pulling among the families, victims of poverty and shared living conditions. At least the jackdaws lived in harmony with each other, though they did fight viciously with the wild doves. The strange thing was that these urbane birds always managed to scare off the jackdaws, whose claws and beaks could incite fear even in a man.
As soon as we entered class, the birds would come down from the trees. As there were so many of us children, we would always be throwing them little bits of food. I noticed the same thing several years later as a soldier in Corinth. As soon as the units left for drills, the camp would fill with birds, crows in particular. Soldiers, of course, always throw a lot more. We were but poor children from working-class neighbourhoods. We never had more than five cents, ten in the best instance. Even this was hard come by, often involving the shedding of tears. So there was precious little we could actually afford to throw away. However, our superiority would shine through whenever we went on parade together with the other schools. We always had the best flag-bearer and our flankers were all dashing young men. And of course, we never neglected to call all the other boys weaklings and lily-livered, which invariably led to nasty clashes. This simple life did have its advantages. Shortly before the war, the state put a price on the heads of jackdaws—three drachmas apiece. They had become a menace. And not long after, as we were having our lessons, we would suddenly see the jackdaws fall from the trees, landing in heaps in the dirt, like old bits of rag—shot down by invisible hunters with silent rifles. Sometimes they made a mistake and hit wild doves, instead. Those we felt sorry for.
On the day war against the Italians was declared—a Monday, it was—even though we knew about it, we went to school as usual. The bell rang like always and, once we had assembled, there at the head of the stairs appeared the principal, more formal than at other times, flanked by the teachers, much like a bishop, when in liturgy, surrounded by the priests. It was just at that moment too that planes were flying overhead. And with that inspiration, the principal began a speech about Greece, rivalling any he had ever given before. We wept with enthusiasm, throwing our caps in the air and cheering. We didn’t serve in that war—our fathers and brothers did. All of us, though, came to feel its consequences deeply.
We were destined to hear the school bell ring again the following autumn, but this time, at another building. All of junior high had been forced to squeeze into a tiny, derelict building which up until then had been employed only as an annex. Our old school had been commandeered by the occupation army and used to store vehicles. It seems that the large yard was perfect for the job. All these things came to be during that terrible summer of ’41.
One day, the message went round to every one of us that we must, without fail, appear at school the next day. We arrived to find the principal and all the staff in despair. We snuck glances at the teachers, pleased and thankful that they’d returned safely from the war front. However, we had been invited for a different reason: in a matter of a few hours, everything—desks, bookshelves, blackboards, in brief all of the school’s equipment—was to be moved to and stored in another place. The Germans required the building immediately.
The aid of any means of transport such as carts or cars was naturally out of the question. So, in pairs, the kids lifted the desks, and under the supervision of the teachers, we commenced our move. The road, normally abandoned, was now filled with desks. And even though Saint Demetrius Street was one of the main roads to the Evangelistria cemetery, never before had there been such a procession. People stood on the pavement, gazing with pain and respect at the unprecedented sight. It was no small matter, after all. An entire high school, all six grades of it, was being evicted from its own building. Many of the onlookers had probably graduated from that school.
I saw an elderly man remove his hat as we passed. Still others smiled bitterly, as if to say: “This is what slavery means”. Every so often we would pause to rest, our hands numbed by the strain, and of course, there was the issue of hunger, poorly nourished as we were. Our teachers followed walking along the pavement, completely demoralized.
As we stopped to sit and rest at the desks, it seemed to us as if some lesson was about to start. Two of the kids who had been transporting the school’s plastic skeleton model, set it up on top of a teacher’s desk, and it was only at that point that the teachers made their presence known. Those tired desks of ours, their tortured wood full of the deep engravings of our names, of the names of people we loved, of football teams—PAOK, ARIS, HERACLES—made with pocket knives and razor blades, were locked in the basement of a remote, half-finished building, from which we now left, empty-handed.
Later, when the time came for schools to re-open, finding ourselves squeezed into the “Annex”, where we had lessons on alternate days, for only three hours at a time, we began to hanker deeply for our old school—roomy, shady and cool like a well, despite its worn-out floors and rickety stairs, and its grotty front, muddied by dirty balls kicked against it and stains from the inkpots which, as was the custom, we smashed against it in a secret ceremony right after the final exam in June. If it was on our way, we’d pass by and pause to look at the old school, ever so quickly, for upon glimpsing the outline of the German guard move, we would hurriedly walk away.
Our grief was such that we would lash out in our compositions. I recall our language teacher fearfully advising us: “Don’t write about the occupation authorities in your essays. I’m not the person to talk to about this.” We now also had in our class quite a few kids from East Macedonia whose families had left to escape the Bulgarians.
The following year, our school was abandoned just as easily as it had been seized. We carted those desks back, shouting and laughing all the way. Back at the old place, we were once again in our realm. And despite the hunger and the persecution, we began to study and learn. It was of course painful to have to construct the genitive and dative forms of verbs to the sound of Germans marching, but our teachers were especially persistent, as if the whole nation’s salvation depended on it.
Later on, the school was once again commandeered, and again we carted the desks to the familiar storehouse. However, this time, we’d grown wise. We believed our permanent return was not far off now. So, when one sweltering afternoon in June, during a test for Latin, we got word that allied troops had landed in Normandy, we were certain that next year we’d be free and naturally back at our school. Germany was crumbling on every front.
Liberation came when we were in our penultimate year of high school. It was only then that we could take a good look at what was happening around us. In doing so, we came face to face with chaos. Not only had we not been preparing for any particular branch of studies, but we hadn’t even decided what we wanted to become. In the past, we had of course all taken a chance pick at what we wanted to do, but had since forgotten our plans amidst the lengthy hardships.
The first time I recall a fellow student of mine talking about what he wanted to study, we were crossing the gardens of a hospital, on our way to visit another student in the clutches of a serious illness, from which he died soon after. “When I become a doctor, I’ll discover a cure for that disease,” he stated. His declaration struck me as silly. Probably because as young kids we weren’t accustomed to making grand statements. In fact, that kid did become a doctor; the cure, however, is still open to human endeavour.
Only a few kids ended up being what they’d said they would. My folks kept encouraging me to become a vet. And even though we had not so much as a cat in the house, I’d always felt an affinity towards animals. No sooner had I announced my intention in class than I was dubbed “hayvan doktor” (animal doctor). Or else, the kids would call after me with “Doctor, oh Doctor”, reserving for themselves the role of the animals. The teasing didn’t bother me though, as I was better at it than them. But the plain fact was that we had no veterinary school in our city, and so this plan was soon set aside.
In those days, becoming a doctor was a big thing. Next came being a lawyer. Secondary school teaching was a poorly paid career, primary teaching was even worse. Of course grown-ups, in the habit of viewing things in a pragmatic light, pressed us to become doctors and lawyers. The obsession with the technical university, the Polytechnic, was to come later, when the country was being reconstructed. This isn’t to say that civil and mechanical engineers weren’t well paid, but as there was no such university in our city, the dream of pursuing such a career was so beyond reach, so expensive, that grown-ups avoided delving into the treacherous topic. Many kids followed their parents’ advice to the letter. Strangely, it wasn’t the quiet, mummy’s boys, as one would imagine, who proved to be the most obedient to the opinion of the grown-ups, but the normally wild, unruly characters who you’d expect would never listen to anyone. In contrast, the quiet types were determined to pursue what they wanted, regardless of the monetary rewards and prestige.
After much discussion, a fellow student and I decided to pursue language studies. We read heaps of literature, intoxicating ourselves with all those masterpieces, and were under the impression that language and literature were the same thing. We could have easily spent the rest of our lives exploring in this way.
Daringly, we approached our language teacher with our aspirations. “So you want to attend the School of Philosophy?”, he retorted. We looked at each other in excitement. Never before had we heard that the other name for Literature was “School of Philosophy”. We felt we’d just been given added reason for our decision. Our language teacher, however, continued harshly: “ Go ahead,” he said, “it’s great. So long as you don’t expect too much bread and butter from the job.” These were the words of a man shaped by the experiences of war.
In any case, such crude advice managed to stump us. For the next few days, I returned to my old love of becoming a vet. But since there was no School of Veterinary Science to speak of, I settled for Agronomy. I figured animals and plants were related, anyway. My friend found shelter in Law, which he had, for a time, kept in mind as an alternative. In fact, he took to indoctrinating me on the merits of his choice, and had at one point almost converted me to the idea.
All these chops and changes in future plans left me with a horrible feeling. I’d become anxious and couldn’t sleep nights. I wanted to find my path in life and follow it. One morning we went to the University and snuck in at a lecture in Law. As the lesson seemed particularly bland to me, I needed no more convincing to drop the whole idea. My mate was mesmerized, and ended up sitting for exams in that field. He’s since become a respected judge. As for me, I have never regretted my own choice.
Ever so meekly, I asked the principal to lend me an ear. He was a language graduate, and clearly identifiable from the loud, theatrical manner in which he spoke. I talked to him of my trials, of my grave inner turmoil. I told him I wanted to pursue literature, but that I’d been confounded at every turn, so much so that I’d started to consider Agronomy, but that still I felt painfully torn. He listened carefully. Then, raising his hands, he exclaimed: “Christ Almighty, young man! Are you going to give up the real thing and settle for some soppy second?”
And that was it – it was all I’d needed. I settled down to study hard that summer and, come autumn, I was in my first year of language studies at university. Despite the difficulties and mishaps, I never looked back.
