Chinese to English: Excerpt from Bing Xin General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Translation - English I drew back the curtain and saw a little girl of only about 8 or 9 years old. Her face was gaunt and pale, her lips were frozen purple, and her hair was very short. Dressed in tatters with a pair of straw sandals covering her bare feet, she was climbing onto the bamboo stool in the hope of picking up the receiver on the wall, and pulled back her hand in apparent fright when she saw me … I stood up to go, but she held me back. With great deftness, she took a large needle threaded with linen and connected the opposite edges of the small bowl made of tangerine peels, creating a small basket-like structure. Holding the basket with a small bamboo stick, she placed inside a short piece of candle stub from the windowsill, and lit it. Handing the tangerine-peel basket over to me, she said, “It’s dark now and the road is slippery. Let this small tangerine lamp light your way up the mountain.”

Source text - English It would be interesting to discover how many young people go to university without any clear idea of what they are going to do afterwards; If one considers the enormous variety of courses offered, it is not hard to see how difficult it is for a student to select the course most suited to his interests and abilities. If a student goes to university to acquire a broader perspective of life, to enlarge his ideas and to learn to think for himself, he will undoubtedly benefit. Schools often have too restricting an atmosphere, with its timetables and disciplines, to allow him much time for independent assessment of the work he is asked to do. Most students would, I believe, profit by a year’s exploration of different academic studies, especially those "all-rounders" with no particular interest.
