1. Place the assembled electrode downward to fix it to a supporting frame and connect it to an instrument.
2. Cleaning the electrode: place the beaker containing deionized water on the magnetic stirrer plate, completely immerse the electrode in the deionized water. Clean the electrode by stirring until the instrument connected is stable at -(12-22)mV. The deionized water can be replaced during cleaning to speed up the process.
3. Detect whether the permeable-membrane is properly placed: Drip a drop of saturated sodium hydroxide solution into the deionized water from step 1 (1 drop/50 ml), wait for the instrument to stabilize at a certain value. If the instrument shows a value higher than (20-30)mV, it means that the permeable-membrane is properly placed.
4. Use a standard solution to calibrate the electrode: test the electrode’s electric potential of two or more ammonia-ion standard solutions with different concentrations and record the result. Draw a standard curve diagram of the electrode "mV-PNH4" according to the recorded mV value and PNH3 value (pH value of the ammonia-ion concentration), and operate as per the instrument manual.
5. Test the sample with the ammonia electrode, note down the mV value and find the corresponding PNH4 value on the standard curve diagram. Lastly, calculate the corresponding concentration of ammonia-ion.
