English to Malay: Clean Batik Initiative

Batik is one the most well known traditional handicrafts in Malaysia and has found its way to the heart of the Malaysian culture and people. Batik refers to the process of wax-resist painting and dye painting to produce a multi-coloured intricate design to fabrics, containing traditional textiles with images of leafs, flowers and butterflies. The World Batik Council estimated in 2010 that there are approximately 700 Batik producers in Malaysia, with a dominated production in the Northeast of Malaysia in the states Kelantan and Terengganu.

However, the Batik industry is sorely afflicted: rapid industrialisation since the 90’s cost pressure and economic crisis at the end of the century have lead to some decline of the handicraft. It is the opportunity for batik producers to expand strategies towards eco Batik business to improve its profitability, competitiveness, and market share without compromising resources for future generations. Since textile world or market highly demand on environmental friendly textiles, it is appropriate to channel Malaysian Batik towards green issues. Eco Batik means the production of Batik concerning the environmental issues related to the use of energy, chemical usage, solid waste, contaminated land, emissions to atmosphere and other environmental issues.

Batik merupakan salah satu kraftangan tradisional yang terkenal di Malaysia dan ia telah sebati di hati dan budaya masyarakat Malaysia. Batik merujuk kepada proses melukis dengan menggunakan lilin kalis dan pencelup bagi menghasilkan motif rumit pelbagai warna pada fabrik, yang terdiri daripada tekstil tradisional dengan motif dedaun, bunga-bungaan dan rama-rama. Majlis Batik Sedunia (World Batik Council) pada tahun 2010 menganggarkan bahawa terdapat kira-kira 700 pengeluar batik di Malaysia, dengan majoritinya berpusat di pantai timur Malaysia, di negeri Kelantan dan Terengganu.

Namun begitu, industri Batik adalah sangat tertekan: pengindustrian pesat sejak tekanan kos tahun 90-an dan krisis ekonomi pada akhir abad telah menyumbang kepada kemerosotan kraftangan tersebut. Ini merupakan peluang bagi pengeluar batik untuk mengembangkan strategi ke arah perniagaan Batik eko bagi meningkatkan keuntungan, daya saing, dan bahagian pasaran tanpa menjejaskan sumber-sumber semula jadi bagi generasi akan datang. Oleh kerana terdapat permintaan yang tinggi untuk tekstil mesra alam di dunia atau pasaran tekstil, maka adalah bersesuaian untuk menyalurkan Batik Malaysia ke arah isu-isu hijau. Batik Eko bermaksud pengeluaran Batik yang mengambil kira isu-isu alam sekitar yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan tenaga, bahan kimia, sisa pepejal, pencemaran tanah, pembebasan ke udara dan masalah persekitaran yang lain.

Petaling Jaya / 29 April 2008 – BonusKad Loyalty Sdn Bhd (the manager of the BonusLink programme), in its continued effort to ‘give back’ to Members, crowned five Members as BonusLink Millionaires and gave seven Members and their partners dream holidays to the Seven Wonders of the World.

2008 marks a special time for BonusLink as they are celebrating the best of 10 years. A whole year of excitement has been planned for BonusLink Members, starting with a chance to be a BonusLink Millionaire. There is a total of 20 million BonusLink Points up for grabs! All Members need to do is tick the 10 reasons why they are proud to be BonusLink Members and submit their forms by the contest dates mentioned. Subsequently, every 7 swipes across a minimum of three Partners will increase their chances to a dream holiday. Seven lucky winners won an amazing holiday (for two) to one of the 7 Wonders : Taj Mahal in India, Great Wall of China, Stonehenge in United Kingdom, Eiffel Tower in France, Ancient Ruins of Petra in Jordan, Colosseum in Italy and Leaning Tower of Pisa, also in Italy. Each prize includes airfare, accommodation and tour package for two; in addition each winner also received spending money of RM5,000.

Making it rewarding for Partners (Merchants)
Apart from rewarding Members for using their BonusLink cards, the ‘7 Swipes to 7 Wonders’ campaign served as a great way to help Partners increase sales, especially during the year-end period. They include: Sime Darby Travel, Sheraton Labuan, Caring Pharmacy, Focus Point, Onking, Homes Harmony, Hertz, Astro, CARs, Pathlab and ESH.

BonusLink goes green
In keeping with the company’s commitment to bring awareness to the problem of Global Warming, BonusLink’s ‘GreenEarth’ Program is a significant part of the ‘7 Swipes to 7 Wonders’ campaign. With each Members’ first 7 swipes across three Partners, BonusLink will contribute 7 Points to the BonusLink ‘GreenEarth’ Program that will be used for environmental preservation and education projects. One of the initiatives under this education project is to make school children aware of Global Warming and teach them ways to reduce Global Warming. A team comprising of BonusLink staff, devised an interesting program conveying the message of Global Warming to children via interactive exercises. During the visit to schools, BonusLink staff also conducted tree-planting exercises, where tree saplings were presented to the schools for them to grow and nurture. Another initiative is to help BonusLink Members know more about Global Warming and environmental conservation. I'm a native Malay speaker and highly proficient in English.

I grew up in Malaysia where Malay is the national language & furthered my studies (Undergraduate) in the UK for 2 years. The two years of studying and living abroad has helped to strengthen my fluency of the English language.
