I have completed my university degree, majoring in media studies at one of the universities in Malaysia. Before I obtained my degree, I was attached to a local English property magazine as their in-house journalist. After eight months with the company, I was offered a scholarship to pursue my degree at HELP University College. In June 2010, my final semester at the university, I was offered a full-time job by a local national English newspaper as a cadet journalist - after I completed my three-month internship with the company. While began my career in the journalism industry, I was completing my final semester in university which required me to write a research paper at the same time.
Working as a news journalist in the past two years, I was given opportunities to participate in different national events, vary from writing for Malaysia’s Parliament to protest on the streets. The writing experiences have taught me valuable lessons, especially in terms of accuracy and timeliness. As a person who always looking for different opportunities to improve myself, I will not limit myself to news writing, but will go extra miles to expand my writing skill.
Besides my experiences working with a newspaper company, another advantage being a Malaysian is that most of us are multi-lingual. I can speak and write in English and Malay (which means I am able to communicate with Indonesians despite minor differences between Malay and Bahasa Indonesia). Although I am not good in Chinese writing and reading, but as a Chinese myself, I speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien (dialect similar to Taiwan’s national language) and Hakka.
Currently based in South Italy, I’m freelancing for various media (online mostly). While living in a city where its people speak only Italian language, I’m currently taking up a course to learn the language. |
