All of these interpretations can be justified to some degree and yet an uneasiness remains. What is problematic is that their method of approaching the painting seems inappropriate to the structural characteristics of Mannerism. The semantic fields which open up within this picture are not unambiguous and are not mutually exclusive. Semantic fields are held in taut relation one to the other, and, in the process of analysis and in reference to the visual repertoire, they constantly expand in meaning. The viewer of Mannerist art is sited in dynamic relation to the work of art; he requires at his disposal a swift intelligence, intellectual flexibility, a rich repertoire of artistic precedents committed to memory, the powers of recall and a sense of humour. Paul Barolsky and Andrew Ladis are right to stress that, in the antiquarian rush to accord meaning to Bronzino's 'Allegory', a key element of the painting has almost completely been neglected, that is, its humour, irony, teasing.

Außer dem Denkmal umfaßte der kaiserliche Auftrag auch die Familienpaläste um den Platz. Sie waren beim Abriß der Häuser beschädigten worden und sollten nun repräsentative Fassaden erhalten. Amico war damit die Möglichkeit zur umfassenden Gestaltung des gesamten, inzwischen "Piazza Imperiale" genannten Kirchenvorplatzes gegeben. Es war das ehrgeizigste urbanistische Projekt in Palermo seit der Piazza Vigliena, den sogenannten Quattro Canti (1608 - 1663). Als 1730 die Arbeiten eingestellt wurden, war jedoch lediglich die Fassade des Palazzo Monteleone gegenüber der Vucceria vollendet. Obwohl sie bereits wenige Jahre später umgebaut wurde, können wir uns mit Hilfe von Amicos Bericht, den Beschreibungen verschiedener Chronisten und einem Stich von Giuseppe Vasi (1754) ein Bild von ihr machen.(43) Amico versah den Palast mit einer blinden, d. h. fensterlose Fassade, die durch Kolossalpilaster [=geschoßübergreifende Pilaster] in sieben Achsen gegliedert war. Von der Vucceria aus gesehen bildete die Fassade des Palazzo Monteleone den Hintergrund der Mariensäule. Wer von dort auf den Platz trat, nahm neben dem Palast auch die Kirche wahr. Um ein möglichst geschlossenes Gesamtbild zu erhalten, übertrug Amico die Pilastergliederung und die Nischen der Kirchenfassade auf den angrenzenden Palazzo Monteleone und gestaltete die Kirchenfront zu einer Palastfassade um, indem ihre zweite Ordnung mit einer Balustrade schmückte, derselben wie über dem Kranzgesims des Palazzo Monteleone. Amicos Freisäulen in der Fassade von San Domenico zeichneten die Kirche gegenüber dem Palast aus und verliehen dem Platz Monumentalität.
Amico griff mit diesem Entwurf das Konzept der Strada Colonna (1577 - 1580) auf.(44) Auf dieser 1577 von Vizekönig Marcantonio Colonna in Palermo außerhalb des Stadttors Porta Felice angelegten Straße war 1681 zunächst ein Musikpavillon errichtet worden. 1687 kamen ein Standbild König Karls II. von Habsburg (König von Spanien 1665 - 1700) und zwei freistehende Brunnen hinzu. Das Ensemble wurde auf der Krone der Stadtmauer durch zwanzig Statuen von sizilianischen Königen und Königinnen ergänzt, die seit der Zeit der Normann, Staufer, Aragonesen, Kastilier und Habsburger die Insel regiert hatten. Unter den Statuen waren säulengerahmte Nischen mit Standbildern der Tugenden dieser Herrscher und Herrscherinnen auf Stadtmauer gemalt worden. Mit dem formalen und inhaltlichen Anschluß an dieses Denkmal für die Könige Siziliens fand Amico einen passenden Ausdruck für die politischen Ambitionen Karls VI. in Sizilien.

Aside from the monument, the imperial commission also incorporated designs for the residential palaces which had been damaged by the demolition of the houses surrounding the square. They were now to have imposing façades added to them. Amico was thus given the opportunity of creating a unified design for the whole forecourt of the church, in the meantime renamed the Piazza Imperiale. It was the most ambitious urban project in Palermo since the construction of the Piazza Vigliena, the so-called Quattro Canti (1603 -1663) in the centre of the city. When the works were halted in 1730, however, only the façade of the Palazzo Monteleone opposite the Vucceria had been completed. Even though it was remodelled only a few years later, it is possible to reconstruct an image of its earlier appearance with the help of Amico’s report, descriptions by various chroniclers and an engraving by Guiseppe Vasi (1754). Amico added a blind, that is, windowless, façade to the palace which was divided up into seven bays by colossal pilasters running up the entire height of the building. The middle bay housed a fountain, above which stood the resplendent imperial coat-of-arms. In the bays to either side in six niches were set statues of saints and inscriptions. From the vantage point of the Vucceria the façade of the Palazzo Monteleone formed the back-drop to the Marian column. Anyone entering the square from this direction also became aware of the church next to the palace. In order to achieve a unified appearance for this part of the square, Amico carried over the articulation of the pilasters and the niches of the church façade to the adjoining Palazzo Monteleone. He further remodelled the church façade as a palace by decorating it with a balustrade in a style similar to the one above the cornice of the Palazzo. The free-standing columns which Amico had added to the façade of San Domenico marked the church out from the palace and lent an air of monumentality to the square.
In this plan Amico made use of ideas which had informed the design of the Strada Colonna (1577 – 1580). In 1681 a music pavilion had been constructed on this street, laid out in 1577 by the Viceroy Marcantonio Colonna (Viceroy, 1577 – 1585) beyond Palermo’s city gate of Porta Felice. This was followed in 1687 by a statue of King Charles II of Spain (reign, 1665 – 1700) and two free-standing fountains. The ensemble was augmented by twenty statues placed along the top of the city walls, depicting Sicilian kings and queens of the royal houses of Hohenstaufen, Aragon, Castile and Habsburg who had reigned over the island since Norman times. Under the statues on the wall were placed frescoes with standing figures representing the virtues of these rulers, and niches framed by columns. The formal and iconographic links of this monument to the sovereigns of Sicily provided Amico with appropriate means to give expression to Charles VI’s political ambitions for this region of his empire.

Nun gibt es zwar Sammlungen dieser Art, und zum Theil sehr reichliche, wie die schon erwähnten von Kant, Carus, Scheidler und noch ältern von Muratori, Henning, Mauchart, aber diesen fehlt wieder das System, die tiefe naturphilosophische Begründung. Seine früheren verwandten Werke: über die Nachtseite der Naturwissenschaft (in drei Auflagen), Ahnungen einer allgemeinen Geschichte des Lebens, Symbolik des Traums, haben die vorherrschende Neigung und das ausgezeichnete Talent des Verfassers für Untersuchungen über die menschliche Seele genügend dargethan. Durch seine Naturgeschichte, von der jezt ebenfalls eine zweite Auflage erscheint, durch seine Kosmologie, die Urwelt und die Fixsterne, hat er zugleich wie Oken bewiesen, daß ihn die philosophische Spekulation nicht einseitig vom Gebiet der Erfahrung hat abirren lassen. His work is by far the most systematic and at the same time comprehensive of its kind. It should not be confused with related natural philosophical works, such as Steffen’s Anthropologie or Eichenmayer’s Psychologie, since these do not exclusively consider the soul, but instead the whole of Nature, even its inorganic elements, and astronomy. They leave little room for experiential data, case material and detailed discussion, proceeding with philosophical rigour, whilst Schubert, with the greatest zeal of the collector, has enriched his comprehensive book on all sides with experiential facts. It is true that there exist other collections of this kind, in part very rich ones, such as the afore-mentioned by Kant, Carus, Schiedler and even earlier ones by Muratori, Henning and Mauchart, but these again lack a system, a deep foundation in natural philosophy. The twin needs for empirical variety and scientific depth are met in no other psychological works to such a degree as they are in the work under discussion.
The second edition is perhaps around a third larger, though no more expensive than the first. Most of the additions are to be found in the first part, that which concerns the physical organism, and in the last part, which deals with the relationship of the mind and the soul. His earlier related works, on the dark side of the natural sciences (in three editions) - ideas on a general history of life, and dream symbolism - have sufficiently demonstrated the predominant inclination of the author towards analyses of the human soul and his excellent talent in this field. In his Natural History, of which a second edition has also just appeared, and in his Cosmology, Primeval World and Fixed Stars he has demonstrated, just as Oken has, that philosophical speculation has not lead him unilaterally away from the experiential realm. A religious tendency, which he previously exhibited, has become ever stronger in him and consistently serves its purpose in his psychological analyses, since he who has no eye for the higher beauty of the soul here below and for its destiny beyond, he who only estimates its so-called treasures, like an inventory, does not have a true calling for this most profound of all sciences.
