Occasionally, the dot in the RUN mode will behave as if it were attached to the top of the display. It will not drop when the probe is moved over the section of the test sample containing the flaw. This is a result of a condition that occurs during the setup procedure. Normally during setup, the amplitude of the resonant frequency through the section of the good part will be higher than the amplitude of the resonant frequency through the section of the bad part. This condition will cause the dot to drop to a lower level on the display when the probe passes over a flaw. If the dot tries to deflect “up” when the probe passes over the bad part, instead of the desired “down” deflection toward the alarm box, a different procedure is required.

Method 1 (preferred)
Choose another operating frequency. The peak automatically chosen by the instrument may be caused by the bad part having a greater signal at that particular frequency. Usually a lower frequency will solve the problem. The new software will not select a large negative peak. In rare instances, the ***difference sweep*** may never be positive. If this is the case, try methods 2 or 3 below.
