Italian term or phrase: punto dama
Dear all,
Does anybody know what this stitch is called in English?
It's a knitting stitch, the pattern looks like a chessboard, because it is the result of, for example, 4 rows stockinette stitch and 4 rows reverse stock stitch. Only 'chessboard stitch' doesn't seem to be it!
Funnily enough.
Any hint appreciated.

four/four squares


Explanation:
It's not as elegant/eloquent as checkerboard, but I checked in my Vogue Knitting book, and five/five squares is the name they give for a stitch that consists of knit five, purl five, to make a series of squares.
