"In de haven wordt vaak het anker gebruikt bij het afmeren van een schip. Meestal wordt het anker na het afmeren weer thuisgehieuwd en als dat niet kan, dan wordt zoveel **ketting bijgestoken** totdat de ketting op en neer wijst uit de ankerkluis."

Ik doe dit even in het Nederlands, is wat gemakkelijker:
Bij het ankeren laat je terwijl je achteruit vaart het anker in het water zakken en je steekt net zolang ketting bij (laat de ankerketting vieren) tot het anker houdt (grip heeft). Dat laatste kun je zien doordat de ankerketting strak trekt en naar voren wijst. Als het anker niet houdt, bijvoorbeeld omdat het de bodem nog niet heeft bereikt, hangt de ankerketting recht naar beneden.

After lowering the anchor, either drift back or slowly reverse while paying out the anchor rode, in order to ensure the anchor is set (holding firm)

Hoi Erica, hartelijk bedankt voor je bijdrage! Ik heb intussen ook contact opgenomen met de auteur van de brontekst en die gaf toe dat hij zelf niet precies snapt wat er nu eigenlijk staat (!). Dat maakt het ons als vertalers natuurlijk niet makkelijker. Het is me nu in elk geval wel duidelijk wat "ketting bijsteken" betekent. Nogmaals bedankt! |

...the cable is slacked out until it hangs perpendicularly from the hawse hole.
