Animal studies have been preformed by Sharfaei et al to examine this subject. Topical MAL-PDT was applied to half of the backs of hairless mice and the other side was treated with vehicle only and then exposed to UV radiation. It was concluded that topical MAL followed by light exposure under suberythematous conditions delayed the appearance of UV-induced skin tumors without increasing mortality or morbidity, and therefore was able to show some benefit in preventing skin tumors.
