Japanese to English Other Poetry & Literature
In a book of philosophy written in the 1950s.
The sentence is:
宇宙は大きな将旗盤である。

This is most likely a typo for 将棋盤, which is literally a shogi board (playing board for the game shogi). Of course, how this should be translated in your text will depend on context, even more-so since it is a text on philosophy.

chess board 将棋盤

I think "chess board" would be the best way to translate it for an English speaking audience. Specifying "shogi board" or "Japanese chess board" would lose some of the original nuance.

neutral Nathan Takase : Hi David - I originally thought the same, but opted for the literal translation with a note since she provided so little context. Chess board is definitely a very good possibility for the appropriate translation.
