limiting values Explanation: The quote may look too long, but it could help you make your choice. Whenever laws are mentioned, "limiting values" are used throughout. Lecture: Limiting values : Total contents or bioavailable contents? Maximum values or minimum values or both? Limiting values allow a comparison of results and conclusions with results of other investigations. They define a value-band which should or must be kept. In environmental interests it has become naturalized to set maximum levels mainly . In the beginning of the environmental movement it was necessary to set maximum levels first as there was no danger danger at all to produce deficiencies when the pollutant output was reduced. The movement was very successful and today we are used to have clean air and clean water in most parts of Europe. Now we are facing the situation that tightened up laws to protect the environment give a better image to many countries. This has lead to a continuous reduction of maximum levels. In some parts of environment regulations we are already below standards even nature can fulfill. Forest soils e.g. have to be combusted in some European countries as their content of humic substances is to high for reuse or dumping. Once dug out it is impossible to put it back if the laws are taken seriously. In addition to that the limiting values mainly are based upon total contents which have nearly no connection to bioavailable contents. In some laboratory tests soils show dependencies between total contents and water soluble contents. But if we compare the situation in nature it is impossible to predict bioavailable heavy metal concentrations if we know their total contents with significant accuracy. For some soils the total content limitations are to high for others they are to low. Nature and we ourselves do not live the better the less resources we need. A minimum supply has to be ensured. But some of the regulations do not allow to ensure such minimum supplies any more. About 70% of the Europeans suffer from Zinc deficiency; Bubble gum and sweets are offered with Zinc but the maximum levels for Zinc are lowered still. Here something is heading towards the wrong direction and this is what I am pleading for. However I do not intend to reduce the great value of services environmental movements have rendered to the environment within the past decades.
