capital letter
Explanation:
I am not aware of a direct English equivalent, but this is what it means, found over and over (http://www.premiumoffer.de/glossar.htm).

thank you all.
Parrot gives an English equivalent, but I have never heard of it before, so I can assume most of my audience has also never heard of it, so I really couldn't use it, even if it is technically accurate.

More on Versalien

Explanation:
In a Google search for Versalien, I came up with this statement: "Waehrend in der Umgangsprache die Begriffe Groß- und Kleinbuchstaben benutzt werden, lauten die Fachbegriffe Versalien und Gemeine." So the technical term for lower case letters is "Gemeine."
