English term

in blending in than standing out

Non-PRO English to French Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters orthodontie, choix de brackets
You might not be thinking about life in braces a year from now, but your braces will be with you for about two years. Metal with colored bands might sound good today, but in a year, you will probably be more interested in blending in than standing out.

English term (edited): blending in than standing out
Selected

se fondre dans la foule plutôt que de se faire remarquer

Implies "blending in [with others around you]"

Also possibly 'se démarquer', but I think 'faire remarquer' is better.

Perhaps: "votre souci sera de ..." or something along those lines, to fully render all the value of 'be more interested in'

Merci, ph-b !
agree Isabelle Cluzel : Oui (mais pas démarquer, car démarquer est au contraire positif, par exemple par ses bons résultats)

Merci, Isabelle ! And thank you for confirming my gut feeling about that one.
agree Daryo : that's the idea

Merci, Daryo !
agree writeaway : if you want to avoid the 'you' aspect of the English. Lots of ways to go here. Text is simple and clear enough. Depends on the register asker is looking for in French. English isn't exactly flowery. /ordinary but not the mess one so often sees.

Thanks, W/A! Indeed, not flowery; but a nicely crafted phrase, I felt.

vou préfèrerez ne pas attirer l'attention / vous faire remarquer

Ça simplifie la phrase

Phrase déjà longue, d'ou l'intérêt de raccourcir IMO
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : ...but loses the linguistically-elegant contrasting balance in the s/t: today / a year from now; ... rather than ... . // At the same time, drops the notion of 'interested in', which is a little stronger than merely 'prefer'.

Elegance when speaking of braces... ;-)
agree writeaway : gets the idea across. depends on the register asker is looking for

Thank you.
disagree Daryo : if I was the author, I wouldn't appreciate at all this kind of "improvement" - and some authors could do a perfectly good translation themselves, but simply don't have the time - pretty good way to end up with some unhappy clients ...

If you were the author you would appreciate using the right language. This is my experience and I don't understand your disagree. This is an exact translation.
