Plant roots form mycorrhizae quickly, even before the plant could initiate longer-term solutions, such as root proliferation or development. Plants can also adjust these associations to respond to changing environmental conditions. When light levels are low and photosynthetic efficiency is reduced, the mycorrhizal associations may decline. Plants with limited energy stores or diminished abilities to replenish energy are not able to engage in ***nonessential behaviors*** such as symbiotic relationships. Under conditions of extreme resource limitation, a plant must focus on self-support; it cannot engage in sharing carbon compounds with fungi in exchange for access to phosphorus.
