French term

Bourdonnet

French to English Medical Medical (general) Excision of skin carcinoma
Hi,
Under the heading "carcinome de l'aile narinaire droite" = Carcinoma of the right nasal ala" I have the following:
Pansement"

What is "bourdonnet" in this instance? I found ligature, plug, pledget, bolster, dossil.

Thanks

Joanna

Discussion

Lisa Rosengard Apr 5, 2023:
It's not readily obvious French, but if it's about surgery which involved an incision then it could be a type of surgical stitch procedure used to close off a wound or an incision (on the sillaire furrow) perhaps at the nostril location where there are silia (hairs) at the inner nostril zone.

tie-over dressing

"The traditional tie-over dressing technique is fashioned by placing silk sutures around the periphery of the skin graft, which are then tied over a bolster made up of Vaseline impregnated gauze and a bolus of fluffed gauze."

"Tie-over pressure stent dressings are advisable for areas of the face, where constant pressure cannot be provided by simple wraparound dressings; areas where movement cannot be avoided, such as the anterior neck, where swallowing causes constant motion; and areas of irregular contour, such as the axilla. The ends of the fixation sutures are left long and tied over a bolus of gauze fluffs, cotton, a sponge, or other suitable material (Figure 41–2)"

"BOURDONNET s. m. (angl. pledget). 1.

The roll of gauze (used in the tie over dressing) that is attached by the sutures is called a pledget.
