English term

Seamless

English to Bengali Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
In a US school directory, a school introduces itself as 'we are a seamless laboratory school...' I am confused what the 'seamless' means in this context. I checked Oxford/Collins/Bangla Academy/Samsad dictionaries but no appropriate meaning was found. Can anyone, particularly who is familiar with US school system or is knowledgeable about US English, help me? Please write in possible details with references and example sentences (if needed). Please do not repeat from Oxford (Advanced Learners)/Collins/Bangla Academy/Samsad dictionaries.

Discussion

Saleh Chowdhury, Ph.D. Aug 1, 2006:
Many people in the US may think by 'School o college' that this school has both School and College grades. This is potentially misleading, right? If you do not find any correct answer, you can wait until you get one, or reject all answers.
Saleh Chowdhury, Ph.D. Aug 1, 2006:
Dear Lubain, I did not make those points in the 'long' eight days because I thought you already know about the audience (you told you knew and forgot) and the US education system (may be I was wrong!).
Lubain Masum (asker) Aug 1, 2006:
Reply to Saleh Dear Saleh, thank you very much for raising some important points that are worth considering. But I do not understand why you did not make those points in the 'long' eight to nine days when I was waiting for your valuables comments and points that you made just now. No offence please, but actually I did not get a single suitable answer that could meet my need and expectations and so I found Iffat's answer 'better than others' and 'not the best'.

It is true that I forgot that the target audience in this case is Bangladeshis living in the US/NY. When I was considering selection of answers, I was only thinking of Bangladeshi audiences.

But after all these, I think if you put 'school o college' in inverted commas, that will not mislead the target audience, as they are more or less familiar with Bangladesh education system and can understand the intended meaning unlike the words 'akhondo', 'obichchhinna' or 'shakha bihin' that make the sentence completely incomprehensible.
Saleh Chowdhury, Ph.D. Aug 1, 2006:
Did you consider the facts that, 1. The intended audience is US (NY) residents, and 2. In the USA, Grades 8-12 are considered as High School and "College" starts after High School. K-12 Never includes "College" in the USA.
Lubain Masum (asker) Aug 1, 2006:
Thank you all for contributions
Lubain Masum (asker) Jul 24, 2006:
have a look at the answers put on English to English (monolingual) KudoZ section Thanks to Saleh for input but you did not give any reference that means how did you know that it is the correct meaning. I also put the same question in English to English (monolingual) KudoZ section. I request my fellow Bengali to English translators to have a look at the answers put on English to English (monolingual) KudoZ section and answer the question. Please help me. I am still confused.

"স্কুল ও কলেজ"

I checked English to English answers of 'seamless' and like Mr Saleh I found Jccantrell's answer relevant and correct. In sum, according to Jccantrell's, "What I understand is that this school runs K-12 under one administration, in one set of buildings at one location. This is what I understand with seamless." So 'seamless' is a school that teaches up to K- 12, that it is both school and college in Bangladesh system. You see we have in Bangladesh some schools that have college sections like Viqarunnisa Noon School and College or Holy Cross School and College and there is no term like 'seamless' that describes 'both school and college' section and that is why we call simply 'school and college'.

Although, 'akhondo' (অখণ্ড) is a good Bangla but does it necessarily convey the intended meaning to Bengali audience who are not aware of US school system? Therefore, I think it is difficult to have a suitable Bengali term for 'seamless' for one must recognize that all languages and cultures do not have same equivalent terms and concepts. So I suggest an explanatory translation of the term 'seamless'. As I do not know the following words, you can say 'amader protishthanti ekti laboratory school o college....' (আমাদের প্রতিষ্ঠানটি একটি স্কুল ও কলেজ....)

To avoid any confusion, I would like to add here that 'স্কুল ও কলেজ' (school o college) should in no way be considered as meaning of 'seamless', rather it is a translation suggestion solely for this particular context.

'obichchinna' or 'okhondo' is good Bangla for 'seamless' when it is put separately or in relevant context as such cloth, as it is suggested in Bangla Academy Dictionary.

'Collegiate school' can be an option.

neutral Saleh Chowdhury, Ph.D. : Dear Iffat, please don't take it otherwise, choosing this answer may misleads people, so I raised this issue when this was chosen as a correct answer by the asker. I don't like to disagree with other's answers. For details, please see the note above.

Okhondo, shakha bihin

Here "seamless" means that the school does not have a second campus or a second branch. All its activities are confined in only one campus. So, you can use, "Okhondo" or "Shakhabihin".

My opinion was because I found the definition of Seamless as: unified, all-in-one, one-piece, whole, continuous, unbroken
smooth, perfect, faultless, uniform, unified, harmonious

However, Jccantrell has given a very good choice in the English monolingual part. You can also use "Okhondo" if you accept his answer.

Collegiate School (কলেজিয়েট স্কুল) ?

কলেজিয়েট স্কুল
-------------
If you can't avoid the English words 'College' & 'School', then 'Collegiate School' is probably the appropriate answer. This is used in Bangladesh in real life, apart from 'school o college'.
