In any boiler the boiler has passes of the flue gases that are occupied with other equipments (normally heat exchanger to rise the thermal boiler yield, like pre-heaters, superheaters, reheaters,... The 3 first passes begining on furnace are "empty passes" (gases are too corrosive and high temperature to allow the instalation of heaters because of materials durability.
