agree Joseph Brazauskas : But both 'makros' and 'podia' = 'feet' derive from Greek. The Latin decl. would be: nom./ voc. sing. macropus, gen. macropodos, dat. macropodi, acc. macropoda. abl., macropode., and it declines like a typucal 3rd decl. dental stem in the plural.

macropus; macropodidae

From "macro" -- large, big, and "podia" foot.

I doubt that they know about kangaroos in Ancient Rome, but this is the modern scientific (taxonomy) name.

The general name for all kangaroos: macropodidae.

I mean, the general name for the kangaroo family: Macropodidae,
and different species are usually called \"macropus ...\" (say, macropus rufus -- red kangaroo, etc).
