this is a common expression in English (we use it often in Canada vis a vis the States); not a specialist, but I have a feeling that the term unfair almost edges on the illegal (as in "unfair trade practices".

moreover, the competitors were unevenly matched

since competition implies more than one participant, I think unevenly matched works without implying intentional unfairness. However, this expression is sports oriented.
