German term

szenische Umsetzung von Filmbildern

German to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama theatre - films
die szenische Umsetzung von Filmbildern

Da mir die Arbeit als Baubühne sehr gut gefällt, möchte ich meine Kenntnisse im Bereich Filmkonzeption, Entwurf von Szenenbildern und Filmtheorie noch weiter vertiefen. Ich möchte in Zukunft meinen beruflichen Schwerpunkt auf die ***szenische Umsetzung von Filmbildern*** legen.

I am not sure of the best way to express this in English. Is Umsetzung 'transfer' here?

TIA

Sheila

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 12, 2002:
Umsetzung Just a wee question. In another place in the text, the author says: Ich habe bereits Erfahrung im Film- und Fernsehbereich hinsichtlich der ***handwerklichen Umsetzung von Szenenbildern***. So, how would this fit in? Any ideas?! TIA, Sheila

cinematographic set design

or possibly "apply cinematographic set design to the stage". In any case, he wants to be a "Bühnenbildner" which is of course a "set designer". It's not clear, though, if he wants to do this in a studio (movies) setting or on-stage (plays). I suspect the latter, in which instance the second option would become operative.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for their ideas. I think this one seems to work best in my context - the guy want to go to a film school. However, it is quite hard to say exactly what he wants to do. Many thanks again. Sheila"

film direction/mise en scene

I think the person in question wants to make an emphasis on film direction.
I don't think "szenische Umsetzung" has anything to do with "set design" or something along those lines, but rather with the cinematic term "mise en szene", which means the direction of a film in terms of lighting, camera, actor direction, etc.
"Szenisch" or "szenische Umsetzung" within film terminology means simply one unit of a cinematic narrative consisting of one or several shots. What pulls these shots (and later the scenes) together, is the location and action of the narrative. The person who has the final say about how it all goes together is the director.

Hope this helps

Directing cinematic images

That's the literal translation.

"Umsetzung" really only means "realising", though in a TV/theatre/cinema sense, it means "directing" or "conjuring up".

Alternative: Directing film scripts (although that only means diercting films!)

Theatrical adaptation of films

It occurred to me when reading your question that szenische Umsetzung sounds very similar to Inszenierung (staging). "to stage" is defined on dictionary.com as "to be adaptable to or suitable for theatrical presentation". My Langenscheidt dictionary defines "szenische Darstellung" as staging and "Umsetzung" can in certain cases be translated as "to convert". I also feel that this suggestion fits in with your context given.

Sentence option:

"Because I very much enjoy working on stage construction, I would like to deepen my knowledge in areas of movie conception, design of stage sets and film theory still farther. In future I would like to put particular professional emphasis on *** scenic implementation of movie concepts ***"!
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kim Metzger : If you're going to do sentences, at least get them halfway right. "I would like to deepen my knowledge ... still farther."?
