Spanish term

cátedra extraordinaria

Spanish to English Art/Literary Education / Pedagogy
A Mexican university has created an ongoing film-related programme of activities that invites directors and film personalities to present seminars etc four times a year. It has been translated as a 'chair' but I think a 'master class' would be better as it is not a permanent position. Anyone have any better ideas?

Discussion

Yvonne Gallagher Oct 31, 2010:
master classes OK also special lecture series gets idea
fionn (asker) Oct 30, 2010:
context Thanks to all for suggestions so far. I'm inclining towards Special Lecture Series. Here's some context:
"La Cátedra Extraordinaria XXXX en cine y teatro es una iniciativa de la Universidad XXX, impulsada por..."
"Anualmente la Cátedra tendrá cuatro sesiones; en cada oportunidad se invitará a trabajar en la [Universidad] durante una semana a una personalidad consagrada a nivel internacional"
Joseph Tein Oct 30, 2010:
Context It would help to see a complete sentence if there is one in your text.
Leonardo Lamarche Oct 30, 2010:
fionn, La tuya no es nada mala. Aquí van otras para tu consideración:
"master seminars"
"master lectures"

extraordinary chair

That's why it's called extraordinary - because it is not permanent.

Runge continued his work with Julius Precht who had previously held the Extraordinary Chair of Theoretical Physics at Heidelberg.

Not permanent, or not a chair with standard conditions.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : This sounds like a term for a faculty position -- for an individual faculty member -- rather than than the type of program of seminars that fionn is describing.

Agree with you! See above.
disagree María Eugenia Wachtendorff : Definitivamente, no es la idea en este caso, Noni.

Extraordinary Lecture(s)

They are extraordinary because they are beyond the scope of the ordinary curriculum.

The term is impeccably accurate for what you describe, and so should be the translation.

visiting scholar/ visiting chair

Either is often used to describe people who have a high ranking but temporary position at a university. The Department regularly organizes conferences and talks by guest speakers. It also regularly hosts visiting faculty including the Ginebre Serra Visiting Chair in Catalan Studies, the Eusko Ikaskuntza Visiting Professor in Basque Culture, and the Consello de Cultura Galega Visiting Professor. https://www.stanford.edu/dept/DLCL/cgi-bin/web/dept/ilac; History Department Chair Research Team 06/ 1995—01/ 2002 ...
