Xxxxx was seen for developmental assessment as part of an ongoing ASD investigation. He was initially referred by Maura Finnegan, Senior Clinical Psychologist, to the North Cork Early Intervention Services and then to the St Joseph’s Foundation ASD Team via the Early Intervention Forum.
Background History
Xxxxx is the first child born to Zzzzzz and has a younger brother aged 3. The family are originally from Bangladesh but have been living in Ireland for several years. Motor milestones were reportedly within normal limits, with Xxxxx sitting up at age 6 months and walking independently at 12 months. Language never developed and delays in social interaction were apparent at an early age. Several medical and psychological investigations followed in India with no clear cut diagnoses offered, although queries of ADHD and ASD were mentioned in some reports.
Presentation
Xxxxx was seen at home with his mother and younger brother, Wwwww. The visit was done jointly between the examiner and Mary Lynch, social worker, and facilitated with the help of a translator. Xxxxx was just woken up when the examiner arrived and was likely very tired for much of the session. He is a pleasant young boy with a close attachment to his mother as well as his younger brother. He is very likable and according to mum has few negative behaviours of note.
Initially, Xxxxx was somewhat reluctant to participate in the assessment, but with encouragement from his mum soon engaged freely in all of the activities presented. Although gesture and demonstration was used to assist with understanding, most instructions were translated into his native language, Bengali.
Although not spontaneously interacting with the examiners, Xxxxx did appear to acknowledge their presence by making eye contact and responding to requests. Once more relaxed and awake, he made good eye contact, displayed an engaging social smile and interacted reasonably appropriately for his level.
