Translation - English If one needs to be convinced of this, one only has to consider the surprise, the anger and the despair of a man to whom gratitude has not been paid, his private sorrows and his public outpourings against the man who has thanklessly used him; with such dark colours does he paint his ingratitude, destroys his reputation, and loudly protests at him as he would against a man who has robbed him: for if in the good that he has done, did he not only seek the pleasure of doing good, did he not gain pleasure from this?
And if he did not expect any gain from his gestures of good-will, why is he angered that he has gained nothing from them? Hence, he must confess that his real despair comes from seeing his hopes betrayed, and that he has not reaped the rewards he had promised himself ; unless he is so simple as to believe that he hates ingratitude itself, and that he is so touched by the beauty of virtue that he cannot bear the ugliness of vice.
