Pour l’élève qui n’aime peut-être pas la grammaire
Nous avons écrit ce livre en pensant à toi. Nous savons bien que beaucoup d’élèves trouvent la grammaire ennuyeuse et compliquée… À ton âge, nous étions comme toi! Cela te surprend? Évidemment, nous avons changé d’avis depuis!
Avons-nous rendu la grammaire plus facile? Pas du tout! En fait, on te demandera de travailler très fort. Ce n’est pas ton enseignant ou enseignante qui t’expliquera tout, c’est toi! Tu en es capable.
Dans des activités d’observation, on te demandera de réfléchir beaucoup, d’expliquer ce que tu observes. Tu découvriras toi-même les règles de la grammaire nouvelle et les manipulations à appliquer. Tu pourras discuter de tes trouvailles en équipe. À plusieurs têtes, ça aide!
Nous t’avons aussi préparé des exercices. Ils sont peu nombreux, mais musclés… et impossibles à faire sans réfléchir! Mini-textes, dictées à composer et à donner à tes camarades, erreurs à repérer et à corriger… Si tu y mets du tien, ils t’aideront vraiment à mieux lire et écrire. Promis! Pour t’aider, tu auras à ta disposition tous les moyens nécessaires. Les exercices t’amèneront à utiliser une démarche qui te servira aussi à réviser tes propres textes.
Les activités d’observation et leurs exercices sont divisés en quatre parties : les textes, les phrases, les accords, et les mots. Mais avant de commencer une partie tu pourras raviver ta mémoire grâce à des exercices de révision des apprentissages du 2e cycle.
La cinquième partie, Tes connaissances à ton service, est une grammaire à consulter souvent, à la suite d’une activité d’observation ou comme aide-mémoire quand tu écris et révises tes textes.
Observer, classer, décrire, expliquer, vérifier… Voilà toute une démarche qui ne sera pas de tout repos! Mais si tu joues le jeu, tu te surprendras peut-être à aimer un peu plus le grammaire. Chose certaine, tu la comprendras mieux et tu écriras mieux.

For students who might not even like grammar
We wrote this book with you in mind. We realize that many students find grammar boring and complicated... At your age, we felt the same way. Does that surprise you? Obviously, we’ve changed our minds since then.
Have we made grammar any easier? Not at all! In fact, we’re going to ask you to work very hard. Your teacher won’t even explain it all to you either. You’re going to figure it out for yourself. You can do it!
In the observation activities, you will need to pay close attention, think a lot, and explain what you notice. You will discover new grammar rules and how to apply them. You might share your discoveries with your classmates. Putting your heads together really helps!
We’ve also prepared some exercises for you. There aren’t too many of them, but they are tricky... and impossible to figure out without really using your head. Short texts to read, little assignments to write and share with your friends, mistakes to find and fix... If you give it your best, the exercises will really help you to read and write better. Promise! To help you out, you will be given all the tools you need. The exercises will guide you through a process that will also prove useful when editing your own writing.
The observation activities and their exercises are divided into four sections: writing styles, sentence structure, grammatical agreements, and words. Before beginning a new section, you can refresh your memory of what you learned last year by doing a few of the review exercises.
The fifth section, Your Skills at Your Service, is a reference tool to check often, following an observation activity or as a cheat-sheet when you are writing or editing your work.
Observe, classify, describe, explain, check... It’s a whole process and it won’t be easy! But if you play along, you might even surprise yourself by liking grammar a little bit more. You will certainly understand it better, and you will write better too.

Education / Pedagogy: after completing a 5-year Bachelor of Education, I went on to teach for 10 years, specializing in the areas of French Immersion, Gifted and Special Needs/Resource, and Senior Mathematics. I keep up to date on the latest pedagogical research in both French and English.
Sports / Fitness / Recreation: I live in the Coastal Mountains of BC, coach skiing at Whistler/Blackcomb, and relish the backcountry experience. I have extensive experience in rock-climbing, back-packing, skiing (alpine, touring, XC), sailing, canoeing, trail-running and camping.
Poetry and literature: I hold a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in French Language and Literature from Queen’s University, Kingston, including coursework on the historical evolution of French Literature, Quebecois literature and the greater francophonie, linguistics and translation. In my five years teaching French immersion to elementary school children, I have been constantly exposed to poetry and stories in both French and English. I have also had to do many a translation when a curricular requirement was only available in one language and I had to teach it in another.
Agriculture and gardening: I have spent three summers working on a dairy farm in Quebec, and a fourth summer on a farm in the French Pyrenees, writing my B.A thesis, L’Agriculture dans les hautes montagnes Pyrénéennes. My husband and I have spent a further three summers as farm-hand on orchards, excellent work to fill a summer’s day! We now maintain a thriving vegetable garden.
My personal background: I was born in Prague, the Czech Republic. I came to Canada at age 6, after spending a year in Germany. I continue to speak Czech with my family and return to my homeland as often as time and money allow.
