French to English: Interview with Malagasy poet Hanitr'Ony Salomon for Global Voices General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Journalism
Translation - English Lots of cultural associations, clubs and institutions work to promote Malagasy culture and provide artists with the means to express themselves. Cultural events are very popular in Madagascar. The Malagasy have a great artistic sensibility and most people sing, play an instrument, write or do something else artistic, but the consumption and production of local literature remains low due to a lack of funds. It’s sad because most artists cannot earn enough to make a living from their talents. Music, painting, photography, cinema, sculpture, poetry, theatre, dance, books and so on are still neglected too much. However, we must recognise that a lot of effort has been put into improving living standards for artists, thanks to constant campaigning by activists. But this is still not enough.
I think there is work to be done to ‘educate’ people’s curiosity and get them into the habit of being open to discovering unfamiliar artists and different styles. As far as the language is concerned, influential people in positions of power should set an example by making the effort to speak well. Make time to take lessons. Why not? Malagasy is predominantly a spoken language and the culture encourages good orators. People have a tendency to copy their political representatives, so if the leaders speak their own language badly, the people will do the same.

A native English speaker, I translate from French to English.
I always aim to communicate clearly and effectively. I enjoy examining texts and absorbing new ideas so that I can convey your message accurately and appropriately, whatever audience you are seeking to reach. My ultimate goal is to produce translations that read like original writing in English.
I specialize in Arts & Culture and Heritage Tourism, but also work in other areas, including International Development.
Recent projects have included:
- brochures for various French tourist offices and a major theme park.
- newspaper and magazine articles on subjects including politics & current affairs, conceptual art and science and technology.
- a major report on West Africa for an international development organisation.
I would be especially happy to translate text such as:
Academia
- abstracts and papers for a music educators’ conference,
- PhD thesis on an historical or theological topic,
- journal articles on religion in contemporary culture.
Heritage Tourism
- exhibition materials for a science or industrial museum,
- educational materials for a castle or historic building,
- a cathedral guide-book or audio-guide script.
Arts and Culture
- the brochure and concert programmes for a music festival,
- sleeve notes for an Early Music CD,
- a book about historical dance.
