Central heating systems in most modern homes have a forced-air distribution system like the one shown at right. Typically, a gas or oil furnace heats air, and the blower propels it into supply ducts that carry it throughout the house. Return ducts carry the air back to the heat source. To heat a house evenly, a forced-air system may need to be balanced by adjusting the dampers inside the supply ducts that control air distribution. A dirty filter, poorly adjusted dampers, and obstructed registers are the usual causes of inefficient heating by a forced-air system.
Most other central heating systems use pipes to carry hot water or steam to convectors or radiators throughout the house. Easily solved problems, such as trapped air or insufficient boiler water, are the most common causes of complaints.
Adjusting and fixing a gas furnace is relatively easy. Except for changing oil and air filters and restarting the unit in an emergency, oil furnace repairs are best left to a professional.
One or more thermostats control a central heating system. You can clean and adjust a troublesome mechanical thermostat; replace an electronic model that tests faulty. For safety, keep the area around a furnace clear of combustible materials. Cut off both fuel and electricity to a furnace whenever you shut it down for repairs. Don't try to remove the asbestos coating found on some older ducts or pipes; that's a job for an asbestos-abatement contractor (listed in the Yellow Pages).

About my source and target languages
My language pairs are English to Italian, Spanish to Italian and French to Italian.
I have an advanced knowledge of all my source languages, which I constantly keep up and improve by means of practice and reading.
About the fields I work in
The fields I specialize in are either scientific (Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Astronomy) or technological (Software, Electronics, Engineering). The first kind follows naturally from my education and my love for science. The latter benefits from the skill for researching and understanding difficult subjects I gained in my undergraduate and graduate studies.
I occasionally work in other fields, like for example textiles or advertising.
I used to work in the field of video games, that yielded to me valuable on-field experience in the early steps of my career.
About my scientific expertise
I received my Master’s Degree in Physics from the Università degli Studi di Milano in 2002 with a dissertation on the measurement of neutrino mass, a crucial problem in elementary particle physics. I was then awarded a Ph.D. scholarship in Physics at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, where I took part in the research activity of the Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet in the field of elementary particle physics. Through both my undergraduate and postgraduate research activity, I gained expertise on a variety of applications in the fields of technology and informatics: Java and C++ programming, cryogenic techniques, handling of semiconductor materials, calibration with radioactive sources. Some of my results were published on international conventional and electronic scientific journals.
I keep my self up to date with recent developments in science and technology by perusing scientific journals and magazines.
About my life experience
I returned to Italy in the fall of 2010 after living abroad during eight years, first in Paris, then in Barcelona and finally in Leuven, a small town in the Flemish part of Belgium. Through facing everyday life in so many languages, I developed remarkable comprehension and communication skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the countries I was living in. | This user has earned KudoZ points by helping other translators with PRO-level terms.
