About me
The work you can expect from me will be accurate. Whatever the subject matter, rest assured it will be read, researched, and understood. In my experience, bad translations are the result of poor reading, an over reliance on dictionaries, and word-by-word solutions to the complexity of the text. A good translation targets its audience/market in the most natural and articulate way that is appropriate to the kind of text being translated. Translations are neither automated nor automatic. Translations are carefully crafted renditions of a given text into another language. The complexity and the end purpose of your project will dictate the turn around time. My work will be done accordingly but it will never compromise the quality of your project.
My travels in translation began in the world of poetry and My travels in translation began in the world of poetry and fiction. At the age of seventeen I dreamed of translating poetry and poetry alone... I have come to understand that even insurance contracts have a beauty of their own and that I can actually be paid for doing them. My journeys have taken me to more practical arras: court opinions which were translated into English at the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico; court transcripts translated into Spanish-English at the Massachusetts Trial Court; surveillance recordings (audio/video) transcribed & translated into English/Spanish for the Massachusetts Trial Court and for the US District Court in Boston and in Rhode Island; domestic violence film script into Spanish for the Judicial training Institute of the Massachusetts Trial Court; surveys and studies (education & psychology) into Spanish for doctoral dissertations in Wellesley College; research studies into Spanish for the American Association of University Women; longitudinal studies into Spanish for Wellesley College Research Center and the Better Homes Foundation; general medical information into Spanish for city and state agencies; hospital signage into Spanish for the Boston Medical Center; informational/instructional materials on domestic violence into Spanish for local shelters and non-profit agencies; general sciences study book (biology) into Spanish for Thomson/Cole Publishers.

I navigate well-charted territories using traditional tools as well as automated tools (Trados-Across-Wordfast, or CAT/memories). I interpret as well in the fields described above although most of my oral work is court related.

I have native-like proficiency, in US English and Spanish. Being a native from one of the Greater Antilles (Puerto Rico), I have a natural familiarity and understanding of the Spanish spoken throughout the Caribbean. I lived and studied in France where I came to appreciate the cultural and linguistic differences/similarities among other Spanish speakers (Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico). Living in Boston since 1980 I continue to be in contact with native speakers from all over Central and Latin America. I speak and write standard Spanish while being fully cognizant of the diversity of cultures, idioms, and mannerisms that nurture our beautiful language.
