Translation - English Frederic Chopin: Barcarole in F# major, Op. 60
In September of 1839, after the return of Chopin and George Sand to Paris, Chopin was still performing in public, recitals such as the memorable one given with Ignaz Moscheles in the Saint-Cloud Castle for King Luis Felipe of Orleans, or the performance two years later in which he evoked an emotional response from the Hungarian pianist Franz Liszt.
At this time, although Chopin was in poor health, he continued to teach piano students and demonstrated that he maintained in his performance that delicate touch which so characterised his piano technique.
From 1840 Chopin and George held “open house” for their friends in Nohant, receiving visits from famous artists of the time such as Eugéne Delacroix who was to continue to act as a stimulus to the polish pianist.
At about this time there was a series of unpleasant incidents which were to sour Chopin’s life until the end. They were, however, to plant the seed of the last and perhaps greatest musical pages of his life. The relationship between Chopin and George was in decline, partly because he was weak physically and needed to conserve what little energy he had to keep alight the tenuous flame of his musical spirit. The winter and his advanced stage of tuberculosis were taking their toll. In these adverse circumstances Chopin was exploring new compositional fields, and reached a state of almost atonal harmony. Despite his physical frailty he guided his work to unprecedented heights in pianistic expression.
Reflecting his troubled frame of mind, his creativity displayed itself in delirious poetic fantasy and romantic passion, which gave birth to works such as Fantasy in F minor Op.49, Sonata in B minor Op.58, or the Barcarole in F# major Op. 60. These are works of a classical mould but at the same time dreamlike, melancholic and of an ethereal and wistful nature.
The Barcarole was written between 1845 and 1846, before Chopin and George terminated their relationship, and was performed for the first time by the author on the 16th of February in 1848, prior to the French Revolution which was to dethrone Luis Felipe of Orleans. (The Revolution, the rupture with his wife and his loneliness were all demotivating factors for him.) The Barcarole, which comes at the height of Chopin’s compositional maturity, draws us into a serene dream world with brush strokes reminiscent of his polish origins, his love and passion, all drawn from memories of happier times. This work, better than any other, submerges us in the marvellous world of the piano of Chopin.
