Un après-midi, alors qu'ils étaient en train de tenir conseil entre les branches du pistachier, Akli s'aperçoit que la porte grillagée du tennis est entrouverte et que la gazelle n'est plus là. Tandis que Gésualdo court donner l'alerte, ils commencent, en patrouille, à la chercher dans les environs et ils la repèrent bientôt dans le jardin près de la tonnelle aux glycines. Pour l'empêcher de s'enfuir ils se dispersent, en cercle, et sur ces entrefaites arrive le père de Pierre. Selon son habitude il s'approche, doucement, en lui tendant une cigarette, mais repue ou changée par cette liberté nouvelle, elle dédaigne l'offrande et s'éloigne vers le filet d'eau qui coule sous les hévéas. Là, comme si elle était de retour dans son Sud natal, elle se penche sur le ruisseau, les deux pattes antérieures dans le courant, et effleure de sa truffe la surface limpide de l'eau dans l'attitude des bêtes sauvages en train de boire.
Le père de Pierre veut en profiter pour s'approcher, mais en plusieurs bonds rapides elle s'eloigne vers une autre partie du jardin. Devant ce nouvel échec, Gésualdo est chargé d'aller dire au gérant ou au commis d'amener tous les ouvriers disponibles, d'appeler le gardien-chef des pénitenciers, et surtout d'avertir Hans. Et en les attendant son père continue à suivre à distance la gazelle, qui en arrachant de-ci, de-là des feuilles d'un coup sec, s'éloigne vers la rangée de gros bambous qui clôture le found du jardin et, d'un bond, elle disparaît de l'autre côté dans le champ de maïs. One afternoon while they were having a meeting, Akli saw, through the branches of the pistachio tree, that the gate to the tennis court was partially open and that the gazelle was gone. While Gésualdo ran to give warning, they started to patrol the surrounding areas for her, and before long they found her in the garden next to the wisteria bower. To keep her from running off, they split up and formed a circle. In the meantime, Pierre's father arrived. He advanced in his usual way: softly, extending a cigarette out to her. But either she wasn't hungry or the new freedom had changed her, for she disdained the offering and withdrew towards the stream that coursed under the rubber trees. As if she had returned to her native South, she leaned towards the water, her two front hooves in the current, and dipped her snout into the water's limpid surface in the way that wild animals do when they drink.
Pierre's father wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to advance, but she withdrew to another part of the garden in several quick bounds. With this new setback, Gésualdo was given the responsibility of going to tell the administrator and the clerk to bring all the available workers, to call the head prison guard, and, most importantly, to alert Hans. And his father continued to follow the gazelle from a distance as he waited for them to arrive. She tore a leaf here and there with dry snaps and withdrew towards the row of thick bamboo that closed off the end of the garden. Guidelines
Preamble
The members of the Society for the Development of Media in Africa (SODEMA) believes that an informed public is a precursor to justice and the foundation itself of a democracy. The role of the journalist is to advance these aims by searching out the truth and providing fair, clear accounts of events and information that he or she reports. Whatever the media, the journalist strives to serve the public with scrupulousness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility.
The members of SODEMA share a concern for the professional code of conduct and have adopted guidelines in this regard.
Research the facts and reveal them.
A journalist must be honest, fair, and courageous in his or her efforts to collect, report on, and publish information.
A journalist must:
• Verify the accuracy of sources and be careful to avoid any error due to inattention. It is never permissible to deliberately distort facts.
• Ensure that the information gathered and published is balanced.
• Identify and cite sources, in so far as possible.
• Always question the motives of his or her sources prior to promising them anonymity.
• Clarify the conditions associated with any promise made in exchange for anonymity.
• Keep his or her promises.
• Ensure that the headlines, newsflashes, promotions, photos, images, sound, graphics, and excerpts from interviews aren't misleading.
• Honor suspects' right of being innocent until proven guilty
• Inform the public of a trial while accounting for the presumption of innocence. |

I graduated with an MFA in literary translation (French and German) in 2004 and have been a freelancer ever since.
Two book-length translations which I have done have been published within the past two years, one of which (The Tongue's Blood Does Not Run Dry, by Assia Djebar) won a PEN American Center Translation Fund Grant in 2006. I am I: Experiences of Self in Early Childhood, was published last year. I have also translated a screenplay, a memoir, and co-edited the first English translation of La Dragonne, a 19th-century text by Alfred Jarry.
Last summer I worked as a FR < > EN interpreter for the International Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability in Eugene, Oregon while doing ongoing work for different translation agencies. This year, I work in the mornings as a teaching assistant at a French immersion kindergarten.
I have also done translation (whether through direct contact or via an agency) for Greenpeace, Chanel, Peugeot, The International Museum of Women, Sapient Technologies, Sunny Side of the Doc film festival, Garnier, Phillips, the Euromed Committee, Canon, and more.
I was recently selected to be a resident at the Banff Literary Centre in 2008.
