Italian term

volume tecnico

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks motorbike patent
Part of a patent for a motorbike engine:

This is driving me crazy, maybe it's time for a break, but I can't make sense of this.
Can anyone help please?

Discussion

Anne Jackson (asker) Oct 7, 2010:
Having said all this I'm opting for Jim's suggestion - ie don't translate. It seems the best way to get a sentence that flows and makes sense.
Thanks again
Anne Jackson (asker) Oct 7, 2010:
Thanks Thanks everyone, it's always a relief when something I don't understand but feel I should causes debate like this! @Omero, you're right, it is an experimental bike, a 2/3 wheeler, very strange, but at least it makes a bit more sense.
Gian Oct 5, 2010:
omero Oct 4, 2010:
Anne: try this link, its a forum and gthey seem pretty clued up about engine technology.http://www.energeticambiente.it/motori-combustione-esterna/1...
Vincent Lemma Oct 3, 2010:
Taking a further look, I think that this is the overall size of the engine, and was caught off-guard by a reference.
Instead, I take as example my own bike and the "volume tecnico" of its engine. Indeed, my bike can fit certain engine sizes within its surrounding frame - therefore not related to the displacement itself, and is not compatible with larger sized engines, meaning that is just cannot be mounted.
omero Oct 3, 2010:
goodmorning - I think you all could be right but how do you connect a basement to the front end in a traditional bike - it has to be an experimental 3-wheeler or a bike engine being fitted to a car. Wild guesses, but since the only volume techncial I am ware of is in edilizia, guessing the logic of the whole thing would be my the only option . Another option is to ask the client - if the answer cannot be found here on Proz, I think the Italian text needs clarification.
Mr Murray (X) Oct 2, 2010:
I agree Answering with 'engine displacement' on my part was a bit of a mistake because it will be taken too literally. The way I would use 'volume tecnico' is something like 'nominal size' - but that's still not quite right. Something about the general relative size of the motor being appropriate based on the frame - not the volume specifically.
Michael Brennen Oct 2, 2010:
Mr Murray (X) Oct 2, 2010:
Technical volumes That's the only way I know 'technical volumes' - editions of a publication/encyclopedia in particular for structures:

technical volumes (build.), volumi tecnici
volumi tecnici (ed.), technical volumes.

Confusing answers One private response to my query to Vincent did not show up on the web site:

"Oh no, this context clearly refers to physical space"

Then this comment was added:

"Pretty sure it is displacement in reference to piston return stroke."

Per the Law of Non-Contradiction it cannot be both. :)

Don't translate

The (precise volume of actual space occupied by the) engine block can be joined to the front end. In the context of joining this to that, the phrase "volume tecnico" is redundant.

Just saying that engine (block) volume is proportioned to linkage with the front suspension system.

basamento = engine block.

neutral Michael Brennen : Vincent, does 'volume tecnico' refer to piston displacement or total physical space of the block? The BMW reference is displacement. Thx.

Pretty sure it is displacement in reference to piston return stroke. See my last added not Mike.

functional space

In choosing this term I am trying to express the idea that the space under discussion is not merely the exact displacement volume were the entire engine immersed in a fluid, but rather the space occupied by the engine in the frame as a functional unit in its outer dimensions.

I half wondered if "total space" might work, but it seems less adapted here.

As I see it, the discussion has adequately clarified that piston displacement, or cilindrata, is not what is intended.

Or perhaps "functional volume", though I tend toward "space" at the moment.

Perhaps also "overall space/volume occupied by the engine".

My take
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michael Brennen : Peter, I understand this only in the sense of piston displacement/cilindrata, which is not the determined sense. Is that how you meant it? Thx.

Ciao a tutti,
