ECG report
In an ECG report, "ouv. sigmoidienne"...I thought it might be an abbreviation for "ouverture sigmoidienne", but that doesn't seem to be right. Can anyone set me right on this? Any informed advice much appreciated.

opening of the semilunar (sigmoid) valve
It is indeed "ouverture sigmoïdienne". And I think this is an echo rather than electrocardiogram.

The whole sentence would be helpful - if "ouv. sigmoïdienne" is followed by a measurement >> orifice diameter semilunar valve X mm

Note from asker:
Sue, Yes, it is "echocardiographie". In the results under "echographie", it gives various measurements including "diamtre aortique", "pente EF" and "Ouv. sigmoidienne" followed by the figure. So I guess your suggestion about measurement would apply here. |

sigmoidal flow rate opening
Hi, Sarah, in relation to the heart sigmoidal almost always refers to the S shape curve of the ODC curve: The association and disassociation of oxygen from haemoglobin can be described with a sigmoidal graph. This graph is known as the Oxygen Disassociation Curve (ODC) See also http://www.mrothery.co.uk/circulation/circulationotes.htm#CA... and many other references. But... here it may simply indicate the the opening of the ?? valve is sigmoidal i.e. the flow rate slowly increases to reach a peak and then decrease slowly again, where it should be more or less constant or more rapidly changing. Just a guess, but without more context, it is hard to know. Sigmoid simply means S-shaped. All references in French on circulation (it is usually associated with the colon, of course), refer to the shape of the oxygen/heamoglobin exchange, which depends on oxygen pressure in the lungs or in the muscles... Hope this helps. But give us more context.

open sigmoid wave
Because this is an Electrocardiogram report it may refer to the appearance of the EKG waves open sigmoid pattern. For example in specific rythmns you get certain patterns; Torsades, vfib, atrial flutter --saw tooth; etc.
