"un grand seize pieds de construction classique"

français vers anglais Autre Musique organ-building
This phrase is used to describe a large 18th century organ (60 stops, 5 manuals, pedalboard) destroyed during the Revolution. Any thoughts?

organ of Classical construction based on 16 foot pitch [or see other option]

The 16 foot part could be one of 2 things:

1) an organ with a longest pipe of 16 foot.

2) an organ based around a principal (diapason rather than flute or reed) pitch of 16'. This would not exclude having a 32' Bourdon, for example.

Re the "construction classique" part, there are also a couple of options:

1) "of Classical construction": built in the Classical era. This would seem to work because you mention the 18th century.

2) "classically-voiced", as opposed to Romantically voiced. This would tie in with the idea of work being done on the organ post-Revolution.

3) "mechanical action": a long shot, but just an idea.

And of course, "construction classique" could point to the organ's design, but I think that could be sneakily covered in "of Classical construction".

Do you have a list of stops? That might help.

"Classically-voiced" under 2) above should have a capital C; sorry.

PS this isn't referring to a single pipe, is it?

"16 foot organ" is not really used. I took a look on Google to see what other people think and the few refs there are are for "16 foot organ pipe" or "16 foot organ stop".
Tough one!

Peer comment(s):

neutral awilliams : a 16' organ to an organ builder would mean one with a principal pitch of 16' but possibly including a 32' bourdon, whereas to the man on the street it will mean an organ with a longest pipe of 16', so this could be misleading.
