However, Malick was not always a cult film hero – his roots, in fact, seem to indicate nothing of the sort. His early life reads like the predicted path of a National Merit Scholar: After attending Harvard University and studying philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Malick accepted a position teaching philosophy at MIT in 1968. His involvement with academia climaxed in 1969 when he translated Martin Heidegger’s philosophical treatise Vom Wesen des Grundes (The Essence of Reason) into English.
