endowed chairs
Explanation:
SEL-Stiftungsprofessur (Endowed Chair) at the Technical University Darmstadt, 1993-1994

Endowed Chair A senior-level faculty position that is funded and supported by an
endowment. Often the endowment supports research, travel, or other special benefits for the
faculty member. Professors are sometimes appointed to endowed chairs for a specified time
period but the more common pattern is a permanent appointment. An individual’s
unplanned removal from an endowed chair may prompt litigation.

Explanation:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Robin, yes this is probably the best option, the "private" bit might prove somewhat thorny in certain circumstances

Foundation professorship

Explanation:
I came up with this and checked for hits on the web. It makes sense but without the context it is just deriving the meaning by seperating the words into two (stiftung and professuren).
