É uma questão de lógica.

Facing = enfrentar, encarar. Portanto, "device-facing tasks" seriam as tarefas que "encaram" o aparelho, como leitura, gravação, buffer, etc. Ou seja: são basicamente as tarefas que o aparelho desempenha. Portanto, "tarefas do aparelho". Simples e direto ao ponto.
