لا تحتاج حبيبات اللؤلؤ الطبيعي إلى تفصيل كبير نظرا لمعرفة معظم الناس به ، سوى أن قطعة ضئيلة جدا من الشوائب تدخل ضمن محتوى باطن بعض أنواع البحري عادة وبعض النهري استثناء، مما يؤدي بحيوان المحار إلى تغليفها بمادة اللؤلؤ وهي نفس مادة الصّدف الداخلية وإن كانت أنفس منها . وأشهر أنواع اللؤلؤ الطبيعي وأندره ما كان مستخرجا من منطقة الخليج العربي وأثمان اللؤلؤ المستخرج منه باهظ الثمن جدا وتعتبر حبيباته من أجمل الجواهر ولونها أبيض ناصع مثل الدانة وغيرها . وهناك عدد قليل جدا من المسابح حيث صنعت مناراتها وفواصلها من الذهب المطعم عادة . واهتمت بعض النساء به واتخذنه مسابح وخصوصا الميسورات منهن في بعض البلدان كالعراق ولبنان ومصر في مرحلة سابقة . إن صعوبة الحصول على اللؤلؤ الطبيعي حاليا وصعوبة انتقاء الحبات المتشابهة في الحجم واللون فضلا عن صعوبة الحصول على حبات اللؤلؤ الكروية تماما رفعت أسعار مسابحه إلى أسعار خيالية مما لم يعد في الإمكان صنع المسابح منه .
