Names for Judges
Greetings,
Is رئيس دادگاه another word for قاضی?
Since on Iran TV people seem to address judges as آقای رییس, am I right if I understand from this that this must be another word for judge, perhaps more formal than قاضی?
Best wishes, and many thanks,
Simon

presiding judge n. 1) in both state and federal appeals court, the judge who chairs the panel of three or more judges during hearings and supervises the business of the court. 2) in those counties or other jurisdictions with several judges, one of them is chosen to direct the management of the courts, usually on an annual or other rotating basis. رئيس دادگاه is "Presiding judge", but in Iranian court rooms, usually the judges are addressed as آقای قاضی or جناب/آقای رئیس to show respect. Therefore in those cases, it is equivalent to "judge".

Your understanding is correct. In Iranian courts they address a judge with the words you mentioned whereas in the West you call the same person as the judge but most commonly as "Your honor"
Your excellency is used for an ambassador! NOT a judge.
Your excellency is used for an ambassador! NOT a judge.
Example sentence:
Your honor may I read a prepared statement?
Something went wrong...
