4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for your confirmation. I was leaning toward "escrow" since the shares are held in a fund for the employees. "

escrow

The context of shares being issued at a certain date and then "released" suggests that the shares are being placed in escrow until release. Escrow is the standard securities legislation term used in such circumstances.

I withdraw my answer

I quoted "freeze" from Termium, but in this context that is clearly wrong. I agree with "escrow"

escrow

I have always loved this word, sounds so close to the word "escroc" (albeit a rotten pronunciation thereof!)

escrow = Documents, real estate, money, or securities deposited with a neutral third party (the escrow agent) to be delivered upon fulfilment of certain conditions, as established in a written agreement. Also, an account held by the lender into which a homeowner pays money for taxes and insurance. see also bulk sales escrow, closing statement, servicer.

freezing

Escrow is similar to a trust, and is associated with so-called Anglo-Saxon legal systems. This is another one of those contexts where the Anglo-Saxon term would be easier for certain readers to understand, but "freezing" would be more accurate.
