English term or phrase: wool coating
Il s'agit d'un tissu cité dans une liste d'un ouvrage de couture. Les seules précisions que j'ai sont : cloth for making coats and winter jackets,
et : A coating is a thick and warm cloth.

French translation:drap de laine pour manteaux
Explanation:
drap de laine is normally woolcloth, but I'm wondering whether this is what they are referring to here. They are simply describing a woollen fabric used for making coats. 'Coating' is a false friend, in my opinion, it is not used in the same sense here as, for example, coated jeans (jean enduit).

neutral  Gail Bond: I don't think it's anything to do with 'coating' in the sense of 'enrober' here. I think it simply means a wool fabric used for making coats.

Glossary: Wool Coating

Wool coating is not a specific fabric, but rather a general term for a whole range of heavy-weight wool fabrics in a variety of weaves. Most are fairly stiff, but some have a softer, more drapey hand. For more information on wool in general, see the entry Glossary: Wool Fiber. “Coating” is a very broad modern term which designates fabrics based on their common intended use for coats and other outerwear. Typically, any fabric designated “coating” will be too thick for any type of fitted, regular garment, as coatings generally fall into the heavy end of the fabric weight range. Some coatings are fulled, such as flannel, to make them denser and warmer; for more information, see the entry on wool flannel and fulled wools.

Drap de laine me semble un peu plus spécifique : 1 – Tissu de laine résistant, à armure toile ou sergé, dont les fils ont été feutrés par le foulage (ou foulonnage) et le lainage, conférant de grandes qualités de protection thermique, utilisé en habillement d'hiver ;

Je ne sais pas vraiment si l'on considère que les "wool coating" sont en général "fulled". En tout cas, voici une traduction de "drap de laine" : http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/textiles_clothin...

Note to reference poster
Asker: Merci pour toutes ces précisions qui me confirment dans l'idée que "tissu pour manteaux" est en l'occurrence trop vague. À mon sens, "drap de laine" a l'avantage de permettre de visualiser l'épaisseur et la texture du tissu.
