French term or phrase: ligne d'indication
In a document describing various design procedures using an OEM application based on an AutoCAD engine.

It is explained that this is a little line that may or may not be shown linking an explanatory legend to the object in the drawing it refers to; I can exactly visualize what sort of thing it is, from my training 45-odd years ago in good, old-fashioned Technical Drawing (with a 4H pencil and a T-square!) — but I'm blowed if I can remember the proper name for it!

As this application is very closely connected with AutoCAD and uses a lot of AutoCAD terminology, I suspect (without being certain) that this is an 'official' AutoCAD term — but I have not had a great deal of success tracking it down on various 'Net resources discussing AutoCAD, and the few examples I have found don't seem on the face of it to be talking about the same thing at all.

Does anyone have AutoCAD or is at least familiar with it who could advise me, please? Or just anyone with specific engineering drawing experience?

Explanation:
"leader" is the term I recall from the days when I was doing tech drawing 'O' and 'A' levels.

And it's still the terms today, as shown here (from the CAD horses mouth):

Use this procedure to add a multiline text object with a single leader that points to any point you specify in the drawing area. Leaders are drawn in the same manner as polylines: you specify two points to insert a straight line segment. ... On the Anno

Definition of "leader" from the help file on AutoSketch (a cut-down version of AutoCAD):

Leader:
Leaders are notes that reference specific points in a drawing. Unlike other dimensions, leaders do not display a measurement. They do, however, reflect certain settings in the Dimension Format dialog box. When you add a leader, AutoSketch does not add a leader entity to the drawing. Instead, it adds separate polylines, markers, and text entities. This makes it easy to edit a leader after creation.

FWIW, I have the French-language User Guide for AutoSketch in front of me, and it uses indicateur for what Tony's ST refers to as a ligne d'indication. That's probably due to the OEM manufacturer not bothering (or wanting) to adhere to the usual conventions.

Thanks a lot, the various refs. provided, especially Claude Andrew's with its illustration, confirm that 'leader (line)' is indeed the term I was looking for, and this is what I used.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, Robin! This was my own recollection too, but of course I'm more familiar with it these days in a typographic context, so wasn't sure if my memory was playing tricks with me!

Asker: Thanks, David, that's brilliant! 'callout' was the other term that sprang into my own mind, so I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that, even though it seems that 'leader' is probably the term I need here.
