La tua interpretazione è assolutamente plausibile. Quello che potrebbe fare davvero propendere per la tua versione è il fatto che il testo usa "differentiates", che fa appunto pensare a cellule differenziate, cosa che non è valida nel caso del blastocita.
Resta comunque una certa ambiguità, a mio avviso.

Un blastocyte è una cellula embrionale indifferenziata:
blast cell or blastocyte any undifferentiated embryonic cell. (Oxford Dict. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)

Il blastocyst, invece, è uno stadio dello sviluppo embrionale:
blastocyst The modified blastula of mammals. It consists of a hollow sphere of cells which results from the process of cleavage, and is formed at the late morula stage when fluid passes into the intercellular spaces between the inner and outer layers of cells. The blastocyst is divided into two parts, an outer layer of small slightly flattened cells, the trophoblast (trophoblastic ectoderm), and an inner cell mass consisting of a small group of larger polyhedral cells contained within the trophoblastic vesicle. The cavity of the blastocyst (blastocoele) separates the trophoblast from the inner cell mass except for the small area where they are in contact. (Churchill's Illustrated Medical Dict.)

Quindi i due concetti sono perfettamente differenziati, ma il testo in inglese usa il termine sbagliato. Dovresti tradurre "blastocisti" e notificare il problema al cliente (e occhio a non introdurre la traduzione nel glossario!).
